somewhere around here there is a thread exactly about the 2003 str.

I know for a fact look at the thermostat to be sure it has been replaced.
I suffered from a bad torque converter, and headlight motors. Also check the rear shocks for leakage. Look insider the trunk and look under the spare tire for signs of water being trapped in there too. and the more you search the more will be added.

Have the same STR as PHD12volt. Bought my silver 03 87k STR last May for $11,500. Love it. You may have a great deal for $10k. Check her CarFax and have competent mechanic check her over.

Not much really to worry about - except as with any car purchase you could be unlucky. Check the things you'd check with any car (tires, brakes, suspension, past damage, etc).

That's such a low price for a stunning car that you should check very carefully and if it's even reasonably OK then grab it quick! Budget to spend some $$$ because at that price something seems likely to need doing. Plan to change engine oil, brake fluid, engine coolant - and use the right fluids. Also change air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter. Check/change drive belts (aux & SC). Just use jag parts at this stage since if any problem comes up you don't want to be wondering as to the cause.

If the battery's not especially new, plan to change it. Trust me on that. You want a solid baseline.

If you can DIY then do so
(and get the workshop manual - topic you'll find during reading here)

Read the forum (big job!) and have fun!!

All good info here from someone else who is looking at a STR as well.
I have also read all the timing chain/tensioner threads in my research. I know its all relative and the timing components could go at varied miles but at what mileage would you guys think that if there is no paper work that the timing system has been replaced you need to figure doing it upon purchase?

I plan unless recent service records to change drive belts to include SC. all new fluids and filters and check trans at the dealer, tune up, ecu tcu reflash, check brakes and alignment.

I definitely second that, trust me also on that one...
I have a neighbor who also has an S-Type ( a couple of years older than mine) and he replaces the battery about every three years regardless.

Default 03 str

I bought a 03 STR a few days ago with 80k, paid $10.5 for it. had three (?) new tires but later found one of the wheels had been patch welded. AllFactory had one of these rare wheels for about $400. The belly pan was probably torn away but no damage to the undercarriarge. Anyone suggest where I can find one?
Will replace the odd tire, replace rotors and pads all round in the next few days. Local Jag expert will reflash the transmission module and drive belts New DieHard or Interstate battery shortly and am willing to go through the reprograming of the parking brake, windows, pedals etc,.. The headlamp self leveling system had failed but see thread in the JagForum on an inexpensive fix.
The car was lowered and am considering returning to orginal springs. It handles well enough and a bit more civil ride would accommodate my wife. Maybe a 4.2 standard S type is more our style.

Congrats!

"very green" - which one? Code(s) on label by door hinge (er, passenger side here, don't know over there). E.g. HGZ is jag racing green.

Congrat's X2!

Enjoy, sounds like you have formulated a good plan to get her up to snuff in short order.

Undertray - perhaps try Motorcars LTD, they may have a used one on hand.

Depends on the repair. Your best bet is to try and find a reputable mechanic that knows what he is doing and you should be good. The problem lies is finding him. Maybe call around just to ask if they know Jaguars. Euro places will obviously be your best bets. If they give you a hard time just asking their expertise on Jags then they just helped you determine they probably arent the shop for you.

If Hornell means Hornell, NY there seems to be alot of Jag owners up in the PA, NY area maybe post in the regional section looking for some shops then give them a call and get some info on their expertise.

Also if you do get it check out the sticky on the meet in PA in June.
