Buying a Jaguar S

If you read this forum some more you may want to choose a later year with the 4.2, the German ZF transmission and other improvements they made along the way.. That said I've had 2 Mercedes and a BMW,this S-Type I bought 8mos ago is the best car I've ever had. (knocking wood) I love the 3.0 also.

Welcome to the forum, Alexandra! Don't short-change yourself; pop over to the new members section and make a short introductory post so you can receive a proper warm welcome and that will also garner the attention of a moderator who can upgrade you to full membership status once you check off all the pre-requisites.
If you can't confirm that car has the latest generation timing chain tensioners installed (sorry, I'm a V-6'er and can't recall what iteration they're up to - 3rd or 4th, I think) I'd say, "Run from it! and don't look back!!!" On the other hand, if you are like "Earl" from Sammy Kershaw's "Queen of My Double-Wide Trailer" and can have it for some $2k-$3K less than a similar condition 2003-subsequent S, then dive in, post pictures and keep us updated on your cam-chain tensioner renewal effort!
Here's the thing; The S-Type was redesigned for MY2003 to address it's many shortcomings, such as the park-pawl problem in the xmsn, the sticking, leaking heater water valves, the early failure of suspension bushes and ball-joints, the coolant reservoir, the upper radiator hose assy, etc (I may've missed a few) yet the exterior looks exactly the same for MY2003-04. The interior changed substantially so you will have to have a look and see which you like best. Also, on the V-8 side, they launched the 4.2L which is the 4.0L with most of the bugs ironed out - timing chain tensioners, water pump impeller, and so on. So the 2003/04 cars look just like the 2000 on the outside but you don't have that bothersome park-pawl issue when you park on an incline. See how that works? Moving on, they "freshened" the exterior styling cues a bit for MY2005 (and by "freshen" I mean "uglied-up" though they didn't quite do the same magnitude of violence to it's beauty as they did to the (formerly) very elegant XJ series for the MY2004 redesign.) In the market, I believe you can find similar condition 2003's/2000's for similar prices, so you may want to consider that after perusing the forum here and reading the excellent buyer's guide and other posts in the "stickies" section at the top of the forum.
Good luck in your search, Alexandra, and keep us updated on your progress.

It is a Jag engine. I have a 2000 model. How many miles are on the unit you are looking to buy? That matters. There are some parts that should be automatically replaced and all the fluids in the engine to be more comfortable driving it. Good luck.

Alex, this forum has a parts cross-reference with Ford part numbers. The Jaguar AJ-8 engine is not one of them. There are many modules that carry Ford part numbers, so if you know a good independent mechanic that really knows these cars, you'll save plenty compared to a dealer.
Every make and model of any year has a list of Achilles Heels. If you can get your hands on any of the maintenance records, some of the highest failure items may have already been addressed, and unlike some other brands, the replacement parts incorporate lessons learned, so what made them fail in the first place have been improved.
BTW, if you're looking to upgrade the audio system, you will have to start from scratch. There's no aftermarket for these cars, so you will not be able get a simple adapter kit like in a common Ford.
Good luck!

With the price of S Types I would for sure get a 2003 and up model. Don't even look at the 4.0L V-8. Just too many problems and they were all solved with the later 4.2L motor. As was posted above the V-6 is solid in any year.
And your biggest concern is not about the motor. It's about your ability to repair the car yourself. If you can't then just stop and get a different car. You will soon be broke using a dealer or paying to get it repaired.
