Default Cam Cover Oil Leakage ( 3.0)

A few months ago, I changed both cam cover gaskets, IMT o rings, ( because they were leaking oil), among a few other items on my '03 3.0

2,000 miles later, recently when I put the climate control on, it was blowing in burnt oil smoke ( not the IMT's this time).

I found the right hand cam cover leaking oil in the rear next to the firewall. It would drip onto the exhaust manifold, and burn off. I used a brand new gasket last time, clean mating surfaces, sealant used as required ( where front engine cover meets head, and also joint in rear), followed bolt tightening sequence and torqued to spec as per JTIS, and still leaked anyway.

I have two questions: should I re use the spark plug boss seal, and upper intake manifold gaskets ( green ones), and tb gasket that I replaced 2k miles ago, or are they one time use, even though they're fairly new?

Should I use gasket sealant on a new cam cover gasket on its entire surface?

Really don't feel like doing this a third time!

Thanks for any replies, much appreciated.

Firstly, use the original Jaguar cam cover gaskets and spark plug boss seals. I personally have not had much success using the aftermarket items. RH side is either XR85374 or XR851930 depending on the VIN. Spark plug boss seal is XR847907.

Remember to put sealant such as RTV on the half-moon inserts at the back of the head and along the top of each insert where it makes contact with the cam cover seal. Also put sealant along the top of the mating surface of the timing cover at the front of the cylinder head. Do not put sealant on any other places or surfaces not mentioned in the JTIS or Workshop Manual.

You do not need to replace the IMT o-rings as long as the ones you installed the first time were green in colour. There is also not need to disturb the throttle body gasket. It may be a good idea to replace the upper inlet manifold seals once again, but that may not be necessary if they have been in place only for a short time.

Thanks NBCat!

IMT's good, new green gaskets, also green upper and lower intake gaskets... yellows are all gone.

I think the culprit for the oil leak might have been those half moon inserts on the back of the head.

For my vin, XR851930 is the number for the gasket, and I always use Jag parts, I never trust aftermarkets in most cases, and I get parts from forum vendors👍🏻

I used Motorcraft version of rtv on those half moon inserts and where the front engine cover meets the head, all as per JTIS

I did all this last time, 3 months/ 2k miles ago, but here I am again! I'll put a little extra rtv on those inserts.

Right on Jon. IIRC my best time to remove the plenum was under 12 minutes, there is a post around here somewhere......

Oh it was on Joels S Type many years ago when I replaced all the coils and the #5 was defective.
