Default Replacing the timing chain tensioner

Good morning everyone.
I have a 2001 Xk8 Conv. And from what I'm reading had better look into changing the tensioner(s).
1. Looks like the issue is the plastic type ends. Is there a tensioner with a different end other than OEM?
2. Other than tensioners and valve cover gasket sets. What would I need to buy.
3. Can this replacement be made by removing the valve covers. Or do I have to take the front of the engine apart??
Any help would be appreciated.

Search the Forum for Chain Tensioner. There are several posts that are quite thorough. The new tensioners are metal but still have a plastic guide that the chain runs on. Your search will provide all the information you need including Lincoln part numbers for a less expensive alternative to Jag parts. (make sure if you go this way you also buy the shorted bolts.). There are even videos of the procedure. Good luck.

If you browse the DIY sticky thread you will see 3 links for tensioners. Just below the pic of the cylinder order pic. This should provide you with the information your asking. A gasket set would be advisable though some have reused what they had. If you pull a plug wire and there is oil you definitely need the set, there are 2 kinds be sure to verify which one you will need. You don't mention miles on your car but it maybe a good time to replace plugs while you have the covers / coils off. And be gentle, the wiring can be brittle depending on miles / use. You only need to remove valve covers.

If it appears that the original style tensioners are still fitted, just replacing the secondary tensioners is not recommended. To ensure the longevity of the engine, it is best to replace the primary and secondary chains, tensioners and guides as quite often the primary chain guides are cracked and ready to fail. There are also several special service tools required to do the job correctly. Refer to JTIS or the Workshop Manual for the correct procedure.

Do not reuse any gaskets or seals as this is false economy. I have not had good success with aftermarket gaskets or seals and can only recommend the Jaguar parts, especially for the cam covers and spark plug boss seals.

Excellent advice. I'll be going with the whole kit with new gaskets and seals. Thank you for your help. Parts will start coming off tomorrow. Wish me luck.
