Default Car wont lock with key or remote

Hi all I'm new to this forum any help would be appreciated. Own a 2002-3 S Type R and having issues with locking it. Can't lock the doors with the key or the remote. Not sure whats wrong. Put the ket in the door and can't turn the key. When i try and lock it with the remote like normal the car doesn't accept any signal. Tried changing the battery not luck. Searched forum all to no avail.

Hope to hear something cause the car is sitting outside unlocked.

regards

Joe

Does the car have a lock on the passenger side and if so doesn't the key work in that?

Did the key work previously but has now stopped?

Don't you have 2 keys?

Only one key and only one lock on Drivers side. Never used the key once in the 3 years I've owned it. Did start unlocking a couple of months ago after i armed the alarm. So I deadlocked it every time i locked it that seemed to stop the disarming of the alarm and locks.

regards

In the event you are in a similar position (only 1 key, etc) with a future car, may I suggest you don't fail to plan ahead and instead check key works in door locks, get 2nd key etc.

My feeling is you'll have to get a jag dealer to figure this one out and it'll cost money you might have avoided had you not ignored the issue for 3 years.

I don't understand what you mean by ignored the issue. What issue are you referring too. There was no real issue until about 2 hours ago.

What did you not understand in my short message? You had only one key. You admit to not using it in 3 years. You had a problem to do with unlocking. Now you've got a worse problem - entirely predictably.

As it turns out its got nothing to do with the key and everything to do with the lock the key fits into. So it would not have mattered if 1 or 10 keys. Are you suggesting I should have been unlocking the car with the key instead of the remote? I still am not entirely sure what your refering to! What is entirely predictable? your manner really sucks mate!

Two keys - and certainly 10 keys! - would have immediately shown it was the lock.

Jagv8: Lighten up a little. If your help is going to be harsh, maybe it's better to not say anything at all. BTW... In the OP's original post it says he was using the key to "deadlock" the car for about 2 months. So, his key did work up until the problem occurred.

joebit: I've heard of the ignition cyl. going bad, but not the door cyl. Anyway.. Here is what I would do. Take the car to a dealer or Jaguar service center and have them trouble shoot the alarm / remote locks. I say do that first so if it needs a new module then you may be able to save some dough by getting the locks; keys from a salvage car. Check with the dealer on how hard it will be for them to program used keys to a new module and if you need the original module for any reason. This may not be the best way. I would definately talk with the dealer. A good service department will be sympathetic to your desire to save money and should be able to help... I know mine would.

Hi Joebit,

Have you tried putting some lubricant into the door lock and then trying it? Also, the door lock can go bad or the key may be worn enough so that it doesn't engage the door lock properly. You may want to get with the dealer like Jeff said to do some troubleshooting. As I recall, a new or re-cut key will run around $100 or so. Not sure about a new door cylinder though. There may be a mechanical fix in addition to a remote or alarm fix needed.

Good luck,

Mike

If the remote doesn't work, now that leads me back to the locking module as well.

Thanks for the courteous reminder JOsworth. Gentlemen, I would like to use that term for everyone in this thread. Please don't disappoint me.

JOsworth - he clearly states he has not used the key in 3 years so he must have been deadlocking using the fob.

joebit - does the key work in the trunk/boot lock? If it does then it's not as likely to be a worn key as if it doesn't.

Good idea V8, that will determine if the key is good or not.

My car is being repaired by a smash repairer at the moment so I can't try the boot but thats great advice thanks v8 (Why didn't i think of that). Your right I never used the key once till now. I did deadlock it with the fob. But your right checking the boot will really isolate what the problem actually is.

Will post the outcome ASAP.

regards

Joe

Ouch! Sorry to hear it's being repaired, too
I hope it's not too bad (or expensive)
In case it's "just" the lock, for some locks you can get repair kits quite cheaply (but they're fiddly to use). Sorry, no idea if this applies to the jag but it does to at least some Fords.

My remote just gave up locking the car. It would still unlock it OK. I changed the battery and it now works fine. Thankfully I have jewellers screwdrivers or else getting the remote apart would have been impossible. It was also full of dust, yuk!

It happened again, the remote refused to lock the car. This time I took the battery out, left it for a minute, put the battery back in and it worked fine.
