Exclamation Coolant Issue.

My car had a severe coolant leak. I would go through about 2 large bottles a week. It overheated a few times and I ended up taking it to a shop to get fixed. He reconstructed the coolant reservoir and replaced my transmission lines.

About a week later, the coolant light started coming on again.

This time I took it somewhere else to get fixed.
They replaced my water pump and the hoses.

Only an hour after I left there, my coolant light comes back on.

What is the deal?!

Anything else that could be wrong that is causing this issue?

I should also add that my thermostat display flashes on and off or doesn't even display at all.

Maybe something wrong with the wiring? I have no idea. I'm not car savvy.

Come on Michelle spill the beans, year, engine etc.

Has anyone looked at the expansion tank? Take care that you don't overheat the engine, that could end badly.

Not sure what a thermostat display is (?) As others have said- some details about the car will only help.

Is there signs of external coolant leakage? Is the coolant level actually low? Possibly the coolant system still has some air in it.

A lot of missing info like the others have said, but I'll add to what Mikey hinted too... Are you burning it? Check exhaust! Is it leaking? Check the ground!

That is all.

Have your shop pressure test the cooling system...that is the best way to find any remaining leaks.

I recommend you do not drive it until this is resolved. Go to a Jaguar specialist. Overheating can cause severe damage quite rapidly on these engines.

This is exactly why you simply cannot claim you don't know anything about cars. Because you have now had an expensive lesson and the same problem remains. So is it multiple different problems or the same one that has been improperly done?

You don't know and it will cost you even more money to find out. It is your choice.

One added comment. Repairing the coolant reservoir is a bad idea. The plastic degrades with time and heat. Get a new one and replace it. It will fail again.

You might consider staying only with cars under factory warrantee. Very expensive but again you have made a choice.

Thanks for adding that. Engine size (6 cylinder or 8 cylinder) and current mileage on the odometer will help too.

At this point, the above is the best advice. Going through 2 jugs of coolant a week is not normal. If you have regularly overheated the engine, that is not good.

A Jaguar dealer might be a good option. They will be more money. But, they will at least not be doing things like trying to patch a coolant reservoir.

Finally, there are illustrated pages in the owners' manual explaining the meaning of every single warning light on your dash. When a light comes on, there is a reason for it, and you need to know what that reason is. Then, act accordingly.

I'd bet on the resevoir tank being cracked. This is a known issue with the S-type.

If a shop thinks patching a res tank is a good idea than I don't think they have any mechanics on staff, find a new shop.

Pressure test the cooling system, you can rent the pump for free at auto zone, and once it is pumped up if you have a leak it will be easy to find it.
