Default coolant leak?

While under the car to find the oil drain plug I took note to some green fluid with a very small leak out of a motor held with 4 bolts with a belt on it which I guess controls the air conditioning but not sure. Here are two pics with the leak and the motor. I did try tightening the nut first thing thinking its just loose but not the case. anyone else have this issue? Thanks

That is indeed your A/C compressor. Some owners have reported a green film or slime on the bottom of their compressors, and it may signal a leak and an impending failure. Our factory compressor failed this past May. I had it replaced with an aftermarket unit from Omega that worked very well during the miserably hot summer of 2010. Our factory compressor showed no signs of green slime. It just gradually faded away until it could not cool the cabin on days that were above 85 degrees outside....

The S-Type and Lincoln LS compressors are identical, at least for our 2005 model anyway....

Jon is correct. Joyces and member norri has the green film on the AC compressor. Ours had the green film on the bolts back in Feb of '09 when we purchased it. I have cleaned the film off over the year and a half, but it always returns. We had no issues with AC until about 3 weeks ago, where the AC warms up at stops but returns to icy cold when throttling. Just for the hell of it I put on a charge gauge on the low preasure line and it was running very high preasure 147psi (hmmm). I haven't changed the compressor yet but I see it being replaced in the future.

Yes I have green slime too.

I last checked it when I changed the oil a few months ago it's really just a film on the bottom of the compresser.

The AC worked fine throught the summer with temps at 110+ regularly.

I'd wait until there was a drop in performance before doing too much work on it.

Ahem - that better be the HIGH side. In the engine bay?

I wish it were John. If the vehicle was here I would take a picture of the gauge in the lower drivers side wheel well. Maybe my gauge is off but I don't think so.

OMG!! Is it overcharged or what? What's the reading on the high side, then?

There are pressure cut-offs and I think even a relief valve (but it will be at a very high value).

Thats what the gauge is showing, that it is overcharged but until just recently we've had zero problems with the AC. So I figure why mess with it as of now.

Can't you check the high side? Have you only got a low side gauge? If so, is it reading OK? Maybe check it on another car.

No high side gauge. Hmmm never thought about trying on another vehicle (great point, thank you). I'll have to do so.

the green oil IS refrigerant oil thats dyed to leak trace. But depending on how fast or picky you wish to be determines wether the compressor should be replaced. Youll have acceptable cooling down to about 1.0-1.2 pounds of freon remaining in system from the full charge of 1.7-1.85. After that on max cold it wont be good and the drivers side starts to get warm and cool on passenger. You could never have a 147 on the low side even without the system on, with either 1 severe over charge and system wouldnt cool, 2 bad gauge, 3 on the high side not the low.
I would recharge the system, and see how long before you need to recharge and then determine if you want to get a new compressor then.

Thanks for the help guys. The air is working fine right now and we are now going into the winter so will wait a bit to make the change but will get it done.
