Default Crankcase ventilation valve??

Do the Jaguar V6 and 8s have a PCV valve that should be periodically cleaned/replaced?? I noticed what appears to be a PCV valve on one of my valve covers, and, wondered if I should be servicing it periodically.

U.S. emissions laws require a PCV valve. For at least a decade now, I've noticed that replacing your PCV valve is no longer listed as a normal maintenance procedure for just about every manufacturer like it was back in the 1970s and 80s. And PCV valves are mostly plastic today, whereas back then they were mostly metal, heavier, and in my opinion, made much better.

The test on whether your PCV valve is working hasn't really changed since then. You remove it, shake it vigorously, and if it rattles, it is working fine.

I haven't replaced a PCV valve in probably 20 years now. I've never even removed or tested the PCV valve on my 10-year-old Dodge Ram pickup. I guess that with better gasoline additives and computer-controlled ignition, PCV valves just don't clog up and stop working like they often did in the 70s....

Well, Jon is partially correct. At least this is true on the 05. The 8 has an actual PCV valve, the 6 has PCV hoses routed to the air box and intake. Emission laws require PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) but allow the manufacturers to chose their method. Other than that, if you got a PCV valve the check Jon mentioned is correct. It is just a ball check valve.

Hmmm. Something interesting. The JTIS service program lists a PCV valve for the V8, but I also looked at a Jaguar Parts site and they don't list any PCV valves for either engine.....

Are you positive that there is not an actual PCV valve on the 2005 3-litre V6? When I had the dust covers off of the engine just poking around trying to learn about what I had just bought back during the Christmas holidays, I spotted what looked exactly like a PCV valve on ours....

I am green when it comes to that, but I didn't see an actual valve on my right valve cover. It looked like a hose attached to a plastic insert thing on the dash. Could you take a picture and post?
