Cure found for s type alternator issue
For all of you s type owners from 2000 up that had the issue of your alternator stopping and the car battery dying while the car is running leaving you stranded i came upon the cure by accident today!!!!!... I had a new alternator installed and the car alternator still did not charge the battery and still stranded me on the side of the road this morning. I charged the battery up once i got the car home and started the car .. I pulled off one cable and the car stalled.. no alternator. I then put the cable back on and when i went up under the hood on the passenger side right hand top corner there is 3 wiring harness connectors. i went to them and started pushing them together.. i then heard the engine change as though something happened.. i went to the battery and removed the cable wire and what do you know. the car stayed on with all lights working. i went back to the harness and played with it and i heard the sound of the engine change again. i went back to the battery and tok the cable off and the car stalled. .I put the cable back on a restarted the car and pushed on the connector again and wa laah.. the alternator was back charging. SO TO EVERY ONE OF YOU THAT HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM UNLESS IT TRULY IS A BAD ALTERNATOR THEN IT IS DEFINITELY THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR ON THE PASSENGER RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE CAR THAT IS BAD.. PUSH IT OR PLAY WITH IT AND THE CAR WILL BEGIN TO CHARGE
Adjusted theElectric harness connector " middle " one of the 3 on top right corner of engine bay. There are 3 grouped together but the middle one is the one that was causing my alternator to intermittently not charge the battery and strand me on the side of the road once the car burned all of the power from the battery. Here are the symptoms.
1. Check engine light appears
2. battery light appears shortly after.
3. multiple dash lights appear.
4. a/c dies with no air
5. radio dies and screen goes blank.
6. car loses power and stalls.
7. once stalled the battery is completely dead with no power or very little power..
If u experienced these problems on your s-type or other models in this year it is most likely this harness connector that is going bad or has a poor connection . I went to auto-zone this morning just to see if it was possible to buy it and they said it was a dealer only part because Jaguar didn't release the patent. I went under my hood and adjusted the connector and taped it down really good and my car is back to new. Please share this with every jag owner and especially ones who have posted on this same issue.. i read many post and no one gave a solution so rest assured if your alternator is good then ill put my money on this connector as the culprit. !! good luck

Thanks for the "How To"
I am somewhat experienced with the 3.0 S Type, but I am a bit confused, for a better idea could you please post a couple of pictures of the area and said connection to check(?).
Thank you

Well what ever you are doing please stop removing battery cables with the engine running. If your alternator was not bad before you are doing everything possible to blow it and other electrical things out!!
You should have a alternator no charge light on the dash if the alternator is not charging the battery?
Does the charge light come on with the key on but the engine not started?

I just bought my Jag a week ago with a battery and airbag light on. Previous owner said the alternator was bad but it still works perfectly. Could this be the same problem discussed in this thread? I haven't really got a chance to look at it.
Probably not.
It may have had a replacement alternator but of the non-jag type which tend to recharge OK but leave the light on, I understand. More investigation needed to figure it out I suspect.
There are a ton of posts about airbag light so try Search and see if any apply or give you ideas.

I have 30 plus cars and have taken the cable off on several when the alternator was suspected to be bad with no issues..lol.. So please let me be happy that my jag is fixed clubairth... Lol...it's not that serious..lol . Im sure that the wiring harness connectors in the engine bay gotta be defective from the factory because I've seen many post of jag owners perplexed with the same exact issue. Play with that middle connector and most likely it's the culprit

Hi joycesjag. If you would can you help me figure out how to post pics ? I would love to post pics of the connectors but I'm new and don't know how... I know many S-type and X- type owners or others that have had this issue that I have read about will Praise God that the connector is most likely the culprit for the car dying in minutes while it's running. I just re-adjusted mine from its normal resting spot and taped it down with electrical tape and the car is good as new... No warning lights.. No stalling.. I'm happy for all of us

In the Jaguar Advice Forums Thread above, there's a sticky on how to post pics...
go for it..
So I just replaced my alternator and battery in my 2000 jaguar s type 3.0 and my car still stalls and dies with the battery light on. Could this help fix it? And would I need to replace the alternator connector?
I would not do it the way the OP did. Instead, with car fully off go about re-making connections (ground/power/etc).
His way risks frying a lot of electronics and a terminally dead car.

Please don't unhook a battery cable for troubleshooting as he had suggested. If done with the engine running, this creates a huge voltage spike that can fry all sorts of things. This was a crude troubleshooting method that worked on most vehicles up to the mid-60s or so, before alternators. After that, you could cause new damage.
If you do need to replace the alternator, have yours rebuilt or get an OEM unit. Most aftermarket brands will charge just fine, but the internal controller can't communicate properly with the rest of the car. The end result is the battery light stays on all the time. Some people have reported good results swapping the OEM controller into an aftermarket alternator.
