Hmmmmmm... A hot-rod Cadillac. That could be something interesting. I'm just not sure that I'm old enough yet to be driving a Caddy!

Lot's of potential though. Esp. with the bow-tie engine...

Thanks for the feedback!

I race with a coupe guys who have CTS-Vs, they are crazy fast. Of course, you won't find decent ones for sale for $8-12k.

I think that was the key point for me.

The STR is still a performance bargain when I compare it to anything. I was very worried about repairs and such but I am at 107K miles and about 6+ years of daily driving.

It has been the best car I have had and I don't baby it. Much less repairs and problems than what I was expecting. Also little to no mods and I REALLY expected that to improve with time but it has not. Our holy grail was the TS blower but it's been so long I just don't see anyone spending $5k-$7K on a car with such a low value.

I predict it will never come out and if it does only 1 or 2 will ever be installed.

Thanks for all of the information in this thread guys. It's been a real help.

I'm off to see a man about a car...

As mentioned, the shift points in 1st and 2nd gear seemed to change in '05, but that is programming, not sure if it actually is noticeably faster. I think Jaguar claimed adding VVT added 10 or 20 hp, but the performance numbers were not really affected.

The S-Type was already 4 years old in 2003, so the kinks were fixed for that years' models. If I got another STR, I would get another '03-04, but that is just subjective on my part, the whole run through '08 was solid. My STR was a late 2002 build, and it stood up to massive abuse without a hiccup.
Thanks for this info. It's a late 02 build 2003 STR that I'm looking at.

Default O5's Are best (IMHO)

Personally, I like the 05 STR's best.

1. All prior quirks were pretty much resolved (biggest challenges are electrical in all years)
2. Last year with Factory Brembo Brake Package installed.
3. No Chrome piece on the Tailgate so it retains that super aggressive look
4. More refined integration of the Parking assist sensors than in the 02/03 years
5. I own a few very powerful cars

05 STR
07 Mazzerati
08 E63 AMG
13 XKR-S

There are some notable differences in power between these cars, obviously it's hard not to notice the thrashing you get from the Benz and the XKR-S but I'll say this, How much power do you really want? How much power can you really use??

The shape changed quite a bit and it's a "marmite" thing - you either like it or don't.

(Or don't care LOL)

My 2 cents. Several years ago I too wanted and bought an 03 StR. I love it. My first car was a XK140 DHC at 20 yrs of age. Followed by 500K + in 911 porsche's. Back to the Jags, an StR was my choice. Why? few made, beautiful, elegant, reminiscent of the classic Mk2 design and a real honest to God 'sleeper' with the 397 hp out the door. In the time I've owned and enjoyed my StR here are some of the things to keep your eye on and expect.

Btw, I bought a one owner, dealer serviced, all records (including the original window sticker), car with a new dealer installed ZF transmission and 112K miles.

#1 in my opinion is the changing of the coolant hose under the Super Charger. it's a $35.00 is part with a $700 to $900 labor bill....but not all bad news. Changing that hose gives access to a lot of things that need refreshing before they have a chance to fail any way. Money well spent.

These are things I found needed to be replaced or repaired as the result of around 100K mark. Some due to failure some due to just 'time to do it'

Head light bulbs ......amazon....self done....$140.00 ish

Rear wheel bearings.....shop done....inc. rear brake pads and e brake...$1,200

all ignition coils and plugs......autozone parts on coils, amazon on plugs....self
done...couple of hours after youtube diy video....$57.00 ish on coils, $12.00 ish per plug. OEM on both coils and plugs

New 'J' box shifter......$6 to $700 ish....self installed (due to $35.00 internal solenoid failure)

Other maintenance but not 100K or preventative just wear and replace.

Powder coated wheels to original color sans scuffs and curb rash.

I added a cold air ram system that I take off and re install for Cal. Smog testing that really unleashed 'the beast' I would have never believed it if I hadn't done it. Just incredible.
on low pressure power steering line....shop done....$350.00 is

front brakes and rotors......$199 rotors....$145..'red stuff' semi ceramic pads

Trans oil line....punctured by 'off site' parking via Douch house mate

New computer controlled front shocks and shock towers next that will be substantial but once again....a 100K+ 'to be expected' expense.

Bottom line: I love my StR, all the miles in the 'P' cars have never quelled my love for the Jag. I tell people my StR is a 'combination between Elegance and Insolence' and I try to prove it on a daily basis!

It's very common to have people just stop and gaze at my ride and say.....'What is that'? 'That is just one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen' ....no kidding....it really happens. And you know what? I agree with them.

Over and out.

Hi paulmj, the big thing you will notice moving to the Jaguar from Euro blandness is the quality of the ride. It is significantly better.
I've owned several BMWs including V8's and a straight 6 and they do not compare in the quality of ride and the confidence from the Jaguar.
Although I have the lowly 2.5 V6 it is still superb.
It's a joy to drive and a car you want to go out in rather then when you need to.
The S type R with 400bhp is sure to be a flying machine !!
Yes the dash is simple and there is no complex array of buttons, but I like simple and less distraction from looking at the road.
My V6 gets more looks than any car I've had, people like Jaguar's and mine is in a popular colour of metallic gunmetal grey.
IMO the car drives so well because it was designed by British engineers, for British roads and our driving style.
Make sure you buy a good one and not fall in love with pony and buy it.

I'm pondering over a 2005 STR I spotted on line today. In a picture of one of the calipers, the caliper says "Jaguar R". Reading thru this thread I thought the brakes are Brembo. So would the calipers be Brembo and simply badged as Jaguar?

Thanks - *****

The callipers are made by Brembo. As per JagV8's photo they have the 'Jaguar R' lettering stamped on the surface.
On the models next minor upgrade Jaguar ditched the purposeful and impressive looking Brembo brakes to a not so aesthetically pleasing (and quite average looking) brake calliper...
By the time the 2005 model you're looking at had come out they had also ditched the front real glass fog lamps as well.

I was also looking at a few “fun” sedans under $8k

Audi B7 S4 6 speed manual only ( yes I know about timing chain tensioners)
BMW E39 540i 6 Speed ( yes with VANOS and healthy timing chains)
Mercedes W203 C55
Mercedes W203 C32

I was worried about the driving experience with the auto trans on STR but in sport mode it’s pretty intuitive to my driving style.
The sound I have achieved is just glorious
The throttle iinput s now amazing and low and mid range is just a blast!!!

Enkei, BBS and Brembo are just a few companies that make parts for Auto manufacturers without their “names” clearly visible
Wheels are usually stamped on the back

Generally, we don't have photo radar but I think you do. Just another expense to consider for a performance car.

But you know you want one, right ....

I got 2 in the first 6 months...
