Evening Gentlemen,

Im hoping I can get some assistance in diagnosing some problems with my S-Type 4L v8 auto trans with 120k's on the odometer that I brought six months ago. It came with a set of problems that I have been working through,
  • All suspension bushes replaced.
  • Time chain adjuster replaced.
  • Rear wheel bearings replaced.
  • heater control valve replaced.
  • coolant expansion tank and hose replaced.
Despite all of these repairs (most I have done myself) I find it most enjoyable car to drive.

My main question is related to the auto trans which Ive had serviced, oil & filter changed, there were no tell tale sign in the pan and the filter was free of any debris The trans shift through all gears smoothly and is quiet However I would describe going from park or neutral to drive as lazy to respond and when at city speed if the accelerator is planted the response from the engine is slow, once it has responded I would describe the vehicle as swift.

Regards

Iain

Welcome to the forum Iain,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help section to the S-Type section. Members here with the same model will be able to help on the transmission issue.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

Can you be sure they refilled it correctly? It's a little less than obvious and we've known it done wrongly (leaving it low) by those who SHOULD know how

Details are in the HowTos.

Thanks jagV8,
To the best of my knowledge the level is correct, I discussed the procedure with the mechanic before starting the job and feel confident it was done correctly and the problem was there before the service with little difference in before and after. If it was an old style A/T I would suggest that the bands need adjusting.
Is there such a thing as and ECU up date for the trans?
Cheers
Iain

Being the 4.0, the PCM controls both engine and autobox and needs no reflash. I don't think there are bands to adjust. See if others have ideas...

when I was looking at the procedure to refill my transmission I came across a post that mentioned the relearning of the shift pattern by the PCM, this may have been for the different trans but there would be NO harm trying.
My notes are from a while ago so I'm going to assume I can decipher them.
8-10 times P-R
8-10 times D-R
8-10 times N or P-D
8-10 times R-D
waiting 10 seconds between each engagement.
As I said, not sure it what box it was for but I wrote it down just in case.

Hi x.l.r.8,
Well if you ever come to Australia I owe you a beer or two. Arrived home last night, so this morning one of the first things I do is check the fluids, tyre pressure, etc on the Jag,drove to the local wash station for its weekly bath,on the way parked in a quiet spot and went through your gear sequence. The difference was immediately noticeable, no more laziness in down shifting or delay when selecting a gear from neutral. its made it a far more pleasurefull ride, so once again thanks and dont forget thar I owe you a beer or two.

Kind Regards

Iain

PS
Just to refine the operation; example: 8-10 times P-R wait 10 seconds between engagements.
So do you mean go from park to Drive wait 10 then go Drive - Park wait 10 sec. and so on, or Park to Drive back to park wait 10 sec and so on ??

honestly, I just scrawled it down on a piece of paper and threw it in the 'might need that later' box.
As I read it back to myself 10 seconds between each gear change,
So P-R wait 10, R-P wait 10, P-R wait ten and so on. But that's my poor note taking, I would have probably done it both ways and hoped for the best.
