Do I have a DPF?
it was explained to me it was facing down so that the dpf regen went into the floor rather than up into the air
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) filters particulates out of the exhaust. Those sooty black particles in the exhaust. Before it was introduced, diesel exhausts had to point down so they didn't shoot all this rubbish at the cars behind. After the DPF, diesels were allowed to have straight back exhausts as the sooty stuff was now filtered out.
Hence down turned exhausts, no DPF, straight back exhausts, has DPF.
