Default do i need spring compressor to remove rear shock absorber ?

hello

i have to change my bushings at the lower end of my rear shock absorbers, but shocks absorbers and spring are quite good enough to avoid being changed too, so i'd like to know if i need a spring compressor or not ?

the front end shocks did not need any spring comp when i removed them (shocks + spring in the same part) in order to change my vertical link.

thx !

I have not replaced the shocks on my Jag. But I have on two other cars that required a spring compressor. I used a cheap spring compressor as I don't often replace shocks. However they can be dangerous if they slip off the spring under pressure. So it is good to be cautious.

Below is a quote from QuartzSTypeR and the link for this is below in post number 7.

As far as brand, the only ones I would recommend for regular driving are the Bilstein Sports as mentioned above. You can probably get something cheaper like Monroe Sensatrac, but the ride will be soft and unsatisfactory.

I hope this helps.

You don't need one to accomplish the intended task on the 2003 & subsequent cars. I'm sorry, but I'm unfamiliar with your particular model, though I am certain the suspension was one of the major changes for the 2003 refresh.

Undo the shock from the lower control arm. Open the trunk and move the carpet out of the way to get access to the 4 nuts that hold the shock/spring assy. (coilover) in place. Remove the nuts and the whole unit can be removed. You probably can fit the lower part of the shock into a press or the puller that you use without having to remove the spring. But if your shock bellows is rotten and/or the upper shock mount rubber and bearing are bad, you will need a spring compressor to remove the spring from the shock. The upper mount assemblies are still available at not too bad a price.

LOL. Not to sure if you are serious or not. He should just go to Auto Zone and borrow a coil spring compressor for free.

The coilover spring is actually under a lot of load being that it is compressed about 3/4"
Best to use a spring compressor.

The answer is: no, you do not need to worry about the spring at all.
