Default Downshift or Torque Converter lockup THUNK!

This has happened twice now since I've owned this car.

This morning while the car was still cold 46F outside I was coating down a fairly steep hill and before I came to a stop it made a violent clunk as though it had drop a gear or locked up the torque converter instantaneously.

Completely out of character. The transmission was in sport mode.

The other time my wife was driving and the car was fully warmed up. She was coasting down to a stop maybe 5-10 mph and then traffic opened up so she applied some gas and the same thing. Clunk.

Anyone else experienced this?

I believe you've described some of the symptoms previously reported by those who have experienced "the lurch". Surely you've read about it here on the forum....

I thought that was strictly when taking off i.e. accelerating. Yes I remember that on a test drive of a dealer car once.

Is it more than that?

Edit: I just re-read that and you are correct. Though those two symptoms are NOT what I experienced on my first test drive. Of course that car had those horrible OEM pads so the brakes grabby as h*ll too. At least the Akebono's are an easy fix.

This ZF box really is a PITA isn't it. I mean over all it's just the strangest automatic I've ever owned. Maintenance has to be doe with the assistance of a bonfire, dead chicken, feather s and lots of blood (tranny fluid) LOL

I had everything re-flashed earlier this year so unless the dealer lied to me now what?

But hey it could be worse. I went to a Ferrari Club holiday dinner yesterday and the guy next to me was asking us if he was taken by the dealer for a $3K service charge to change the oil and fill the windshield washer tank.

Edit: My car isn't lurching like the animation on thelurch.com when it does this though.

Yes, the ZF is my biggest pet peeve with our S-Type. When it works properly, it is very smooth and a true pleasure to drive. But the absence of a dipstick/fill tube and the hassle/expense suffered by the owner at ATF change time has me debating whether I ever want another car with a ZF in it....

And I say all of this as my wife continues to pester me to buy her a 2006 XK8 convertible for Christmas. Just what we need - another quirky, pricey vehicle to maintain....
