When I took a PCM apart it had 2 Renesas (formerly Hitachi) SH7055 256-pin CPUs. Lots of PCMs have a single SH705x (2/5/8/9) so it's "just" work to hack it. But where's the big enough demand? Looks not to be there.

We can already reflash using a Mongoose JLR, which is fairly cheap. Now "just" need a map editor.

"just"

There are toolchains out there that have the sole purpose of uncompressing an image to binary. I would suspect that the images in the SDD/IDS distributions are compressed as well as signed. Ignoring the signature part of the problem for a moment, it is still easier than having to do an image dump first through a bootloader.

I would add that if one wants to modify the maps, the number of cpu's is somewhat of a red herring because ultimately it is the data for the base maps that you want to modify.

Well, yes but figuring out what maps are where and getting a map editor happy is a bit more work than I fancy!

This doesn't take into account hoses and gaskets needed as I pulled the whole s/c off to replace the coolant hose below the s/c, but gives you an idea of what I paid for parts. Also I did do some basic porting on the intake side of the s/c which just cost me materials.
My car skills suck LOL. I'd gladly pay you a decent rate or flat rate to do a pulley, cats, and a muffler.
