i have a 2003 str i want to get a little throaty sounding exhaust without paying a ton...has anyone just took the mufflers off and ran straight pipe?
if so does it sound good and does it create any problems?

hi flow cats? catalytic converters?
Hello , i recently got A 2003 STR and upgraded my exhaust. I went with Chris's set up... Magnaflow Cats, X-Pipe, 14" magnaflow resonators (Straight Through), Borla mufflers. I like to sound at low RPM but when you get on it a i hate the RASP, almost sounds like something loose (but theres not). Any idea if this is normal or if i should switch to Magnaflow. Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks,
Ivan
Thanks,

I have almost that exact setup with Borlas and mine has no "rasp" matter of fact I have had lots of people in the car and everyone loves the sound. Matter of fact I think it's quiter at everything short of full throttle then my wife's GL 550 stock exhaust.
ifixdents, that is the sound she'll emitt with that set up. You can tame her two ways: swap in the Magnaflow dual inlet/outlet x-pipe muffler in place of the magnaflow x-pipe. Or swap in a pair of 18" Walker flow through tube mufflers in place of the 14" Magnaflow resonators.

If I swap out Borla for Magnaflow mufflers are they designed any different / produce a different non Rasp sound ? I don't want too quite, i love the growl but want produce non Rasp sound at all RPM : /
I have one on my home computer from when I was experimenting (removal of stock boxes -> resonator only). If no one replies with a video before then, I will post it up.
It appears that straight piped jag has lost its low end torque. Newer engines fire on the exhaust stroke to burn off unburnt fuel and help force exhaust through cats some vehicles need the whole exhaust to the tail pipe to create optimal exhaust back pressure. If that's the case if u mess with exhaust u lose low end torque. There are ways to get the best of both but u'd need a genius, a welder, and a lot of time. U gotta start from the heads to the tailpipes to have exhaust that's gonna give u sound and performance. When I'm done making my custome exhaust for my Lincoln LS it'll sound like a formula 1 race car.
I meant to get these posted sooner, but other things came up over the weekend. Anyways, here are some videos I took without the muffler boxes on (resonator only).

Enjoy, and I hope that is kind of what you were looking for.

Hi I have just had a stainless steel exhaust fitted by Demand Engineering at Stonham nr Ipswich Suffolk the system is by Long life, I explained to the lads that I wanted a sporty sound but not too loud ... They fitted sports cats X Pipe and straight through silencers using the standard bore pipe. Sounds nice a crisp note when throttle open not intrusive when cruising and improved throttle response. You may well find a Longlife agent near you. Mike 2006 STR
I just spent about 4 1/2 hours Saturday replacing the resonators on my 2000 XK8.
(75K miles) Both resonators had holes in them and would not pass upcoming inspection. Took a few measurements for length and offset and cut off the old pipe just behind the axle. Replaced the resonators with 2" ID pipe. Cut the tail pipe and SS tips off the resonator and welded them to new pipe extending them about 1' further than stock. Also polished them. The rumble at idle is great and the exhaust note during acceleration is very satisfying. Almost forgot. Cut the hanger bracket off the tail pipe and reused it. Had to bend it a bit; clamped in a vice, heated with a torch and raised the tapered end that goes through the rubber hanger strap about 45 degrees. Reinstalled and welded to the tail pipe.
Time well spent.
