Default Fitting aftermarket one piece wheelnuts/lugnuts

Finally I've got around to getting some of the correct wheelnuts. These are one piece where the captive washer is the only separate part.

I fitted the wrong fitment of wheelnut using one piece with tapered connections to the OE alloys. It is a mistake to fit these although I managed not to do any damage to the wheels. These new one piece which were delivered yesterday have the correct flat face to clamp the wheel to the hubs. I would have fitted them by now if it wasn't hammering with rain here.

Warning for our new members is that the original fitment wheelnuts break in half leaving you stranded if you can't change the wheel. But a bust wheel nut can cause other major headaches. Whether it's metal fatigue or poor design, make sure to change the OE wheelnuts/lugnuts ASAP for quality one piece. Don't use the tapered fitment but choose the type to match the OE nuts, ie with a flat face against the alloy. Ask the seller if it's not apparent from their advert, that the wheelnuts are one piece. For the piece of mind just do it.

The OE only seem to break when abused. Unfortunately abuse by tyre fitters or the like using air tools appears common

If torqued per spec the OE appear fine.

Replacing the OE seems a fairly cheap if sad way to cope with the abuse

The first photo shows the correct fitment.
The second photo shows the incorrect type for OE jaguar wheels.

I think just about everyone has experienced the problems of tyre bay air tools at some time in their lives. The best thing would be to get home and slacken each one off and then torque each one to the correct setting. I should do, but I tend to rely on my own experience. I've also got a decent telescopic wheel wrench in the boot/trunk.

I bought a Carlton GSI 3000 24V and the wheel nuts were locked on so tight, the only way I could get them undone was to get my son to hold a socket and a 2 foot tommy bar in place on each wheelnut and then after he had moved well out of the way for me to climb up on the bar with one boot and bounce on the tommy bar with my not inconsiderable weight until the nut gave in. I had one arm on the car roof and the other holding the garage door to steady myself.

But using a torque wrench would have been a far better choice for whoever tightened them up.

If you go to a tyre fitter for wheel rotation, insist they use a torque spanner set to the correct torque, then watch them as they tighten the nuts.

On my personal cars, I have never needed to change the OEM lug nuts because they are never subjected to air tools whilst removing the wheels.
