Flashing Climate Control Screen
I was driving into work this morning, and suddenly the data on the climate control screen ( standard, non touch) was erraticly, then steadily, flashing on and off, yet the system was still working. Any reason(s) why? (2003, 3.0 S)
[QUOTE=Jon89;1387144]How old is your battery?[/QUOTE
Its a year old, fully charged.
12.23 VDC when off
15.28 VDC when running
Car was sitting for a week, last week when I was on vacation (holiday).

Hey Jimmy, welcome to the club! Wouldn't be a proper Jaguar if something didn't flash on it, would it now?
In all seriousness, my daughter's 03 has been doing similar tricks for about 2 years now. Sometimes blinks, sometimes is blank. Other times it's normal. Functionality is unaffected except if you are of a mind to change the temperature and you can't read the numbers. I've found a gentle touch.... as if it WERE a touch screen, or even a slight tap generally sets it right.
John, I'd suspect some component or connection on the board in lieu of a cable, as you only have to slightly flex or bump the screen... not jar the dash or really cause any relative movement of the dash components or environment.

Yes, could be on the board but if it is it would have to be in a "predictable" place (based on what occurs) - power/ground/... (what else? optical connection?)
Unless you like taking things apart you may prefer to live with it.

12.23 is rather low but not quite terminal
15.x is alternator when PCM raises it to charge a part-flat battery
If car not used much, probably need a battery maintainer (ctek etc)

Car is used alot actually, 350 miles per week, but It was sitting all last week.
I do have a C-Tek similar device ( Battery Tender) that I put on the battery a day before I use the car if it is sitting for an extended period, of which is rare.
No matter what, new battery, old battery, fully charged, after a few days, during normal use the voltage always seems to be in that 12.2 range, never higher, but it never dips below either.
Makes me think there is not a drain while sitting, but why doesn't it stay at 12.5 or so? I also thought running voltage was high, trying to charge the battery. I usually see 14.x or so on cars in general.
First, if it drops steadily over a few days and only then the charger is connected the battery will be part dead forever. They hate sitting in a discharged state. Repeat this a few times and it's bad news. Leaving the maintainer connected from day #1 is the best fix.
The S-Type has an intelligent charge system that you're seeing in action - but it's chemically not possible to fully fix a part dead battery just via charging.
I wouldn't replace a 12.2 battery but I also would not expect miracles as it's part dead.
If you may have an excessive drain, there are a ton of helpful threads about how to go hunting but it's time-consuming and exacting.

Welp joycesjag just joined the flashing climate control screen club. Everything as it should, cold AC, hot heat, blower settings all work, defrost, mid and floor work when set to postion. Arrived at my destination, turned vehicle off, returned to vehicle started and climate screen back to normal. Hmmpffff
My car had this symptom when I first bought it (where did that 13 years go?). In the end I installed a reconditioned A/C control module and it has been fine ever since. BUT last week we had a heatwave. It was sufficiently hot that the lining on the sunroof sun shield melted off. Anyway, I started the car this morning and there was my old friend the blinking display screen. I am almost certain this was the result of the inside of the car getting so hot. One day I may pull the unit out and give it the once over, or maybe I will just put up with it.
Given the heat caused fires that burned over 400,000 hectares of land and several hundred houses, I figure I shouldn't complain about the heat causing a blinking display screen!

If pushing on the display brings it back (don't do that!) it will be the connectors that join the display to the electronics. A big problem in an old car with a big LCD display I have here. I bet they will be fine if you dismantle and clean the LCDs display contacts with some alcohol and a wipe.
Oh, temperature makes a big difference as the plastic in the dash expands and contracts applying different amounts of pressure on the connectors.
if just tapping on the screen helps, it will be dodgy contacts on the backlighting globe. Pull the globe out and give everthing a clean (and maybe tighten the contacts a bit if you can) and it should be ok.
