Default This Forum just plain works

Background Story:

I was coming home the other night and in my usual fashion I was shifting via the J-gate (long time manual driver can't help myself), and also in my usual fashion I was toying with a BMW 540i that thought he was fast. So I take an easy roll from the stop light (Bimmer behind me), and when I hit 35 in third I just goosed the throttle (planning on giving him just a little leg). What happenned next was anything but a power play. No acceleration, none, car drops to idle RPM (still in gear at about 35-40mph), starts to decelerate, and commences to die and coast. This all happened right at the entrance to my subdivision. So there are all my neighbors driving past my oh so conspicuous Jag (I usually love that), that has died on the side of the road. I try to start it, I waited about ten minutes and try again, nothing, the starter turns it over, but it's not even trying to fire. I call the wife, she pops out from down the street and we push it into a little side street (not my street because I live uphill and Jags are kinda heavy). And there it sat and all I can think is $%!@ $@^%&*@#*(@#*%&!!!!!!!!!!

So, what do I do, like all trusty internet forums warriors I come here and SEARCH. I didn't post, I didn't ask for the forum's collective knowledge to dance to my tune. I put "fuel pump"in the search window, because I kind of figured it was a fueling issue, and dug in to wade through all the search returns (you can imagine the words "fuel" and "pump" occur rather frequently). I finally found WhiteSTR's post about the exact same thing happening to him, and how he fixed it. I PM'd him got some particulars, and walked out to my car and fixed it. Drove it home and it is as good as new.

Thanks WhiteSTR, and thanks for all of you that contribute to the knowledge base here on the forums.

Hey ohsigmachi.....what a great story and a happy ending too...nice one
Glad you got the problem sorted and that the forum was helpful, but as norri says....what was the fix??....lol
By the sound of it if it was as helpful as you say, and I have no doubt about that, it should be FAQ'd if it isn't already!!

This forum in conjunction with the JTIS has saved me over $3K. Latest thing was some help on cleaning out the MAF and throttle body. The dealer wanted to charge me $160 for an "induction service". Did some research and found out it was a 10 minute job. Counting the air filter and spray cleaner I spent less than $30. It's also great entertainment.

No problem mike, I'm just glad I could help you bring your car back to life.

For everyone else:
The problem was a fuel line inside the tank that came off the sending unit. My theory is the new fuel additives soften the fittings. The problem simulates a broken fuel pump (and most repair shops will tell you it is and bill you for one). It seems to be a pretty frequent occurrence on these cars.. This is the third case I've heard off (mine being the first).
