Default Front brake info Does size really mater?

can anyone tell me the size of the front caliper bolts on a 2005 2.7d S-type.
And are the metric or af

Going to swap out pads and disks but have no tools in the UK, so have to buy a suitable wrench.

Price quotes way to expensive, so going to buy tools an do myself.

By the way main agents told me only way to get correct disks is to measure disk size.

How critical is disk size I understand that going up From 300mm to 320mm may give clearance problems but what about going down from 320mm any know if you can do this.

Very confusing over a simple part supply. And of course you guys working in metric don't help either.

I found out that several brand of brake systems were used on the S-Types

I would have thought that the size would be linked into brand?

Measure and get the right ones. No you don't want smaller! Tell your insurer if you do!!

Caliper bolts aren't particularly expensive, probably even OK from the dealer. They usually come pre-loaded with locking compound.

Your main saving is on labour. You sound in danger of taking safety risks.

Given that you have a diesel engine I'm guessing you're not in North America. How long has Palm Coast been in the UK?

If you're buying parts at your main dealer, give them the car serial number. That will allow them to determine the correct size rotor.

Why are you changing them?

According to JPEC a 2.7 TD from VIN N52048 should have 326mm discs part #C2C25336

I'd measure to be sure.

Thanks for the info
my Vin ends in 46654

There are 3 sizes listed here (in th UK), 300mm 320mm and 326mm
as far as I can make out mine are 12.6" so should be 320mm but trying to measure the disk on the vehicle is tricky and 1/4 difference hard to get right.

I did not want to take the disks off then have to re-assemble while waiting for the parts.

I was asking the spanner/wrench size, I was in the motor trade a long time and never had to replace caliper bolts.
but I need to buy a breaker bar and need size confirmed, my guess its 5/8 af.

The difference between the larger disks is 6mm (under 1/4 of an inch), and does not impose on the pad area.

I cant see anywhere that says pads or calipers for that matter are matched to the disk size.

main agents are asking absolute stupid money for a job any mechanic can do in an hour.

Mikey,
well the main agent told me to measure the disks/rotas.

I winter in Palm Coast, where I have an extensive garage, no tools in the UK where the car is, so I have to buy what I need.

Well wanted to change out the disks because they are so cheap here, probably end up sticking a set of pads in now, as the rotas did not look bad at all.
I am extremely light on brake pads anyway.

I am taking a cruise back on the 13th and wont be back in the UK to spring, as my MOT (government inspection) runs out while I am away wanted to put the pads in, I expect it will pass with the brakes as they are, car seems in good order except for some slight play in one of the rear lower wishbone bushes

Then I'd leave the rotors alone and just change the pads. I don't know of any fasteners on the car that are not in metric.

One way to measure the rotor diameter in-situ is to secure a large piece of paper on the floor underneath the rotor, then drop a plumb line from opposing sides of the rotor and mark on the paper. Measure the distance, that is the diameter, or very close.

If the caliper is in the way, use a piece of cardboard and a carpenter's level and shoot from 12/6 o'clock instead of 3/9 o'clock.
