Default Fuel brands....

I've had my 2000 S-Type for a little over a week now, and so far I absolutely love the car. Got it from a friend of mine who unfortunately had a stroke and can no longer drive, and it was a little tempermental having year old fuel in it, since it was about a year since he got sick, finally ran that 3/4 of a tank of rotten fuel out down to where the message center said something like 20 miles range, and because the closest Shell station charges 50 -70 cents a gallon more than anyone else, went to the Mobil down the street.... Didn't really trust the estimated range, been there and done that with the Chevy I had when I first got it, and well it didn't work as planned, so decided to go to the Mobil which was closer for the first time I fed the "big cat". Our lovely powers to be in the white house needs to do something about fuel prices. It's my choice to have a vehicle that requires premium, but still almost $4.00 a gallon for regular unleaded is assinine. sorry for the last word of that sentence, but no other way to say it.

Fuel is upwards of $7/gal here, count yourself privileged.

I can commiserate. When I first "chose" to drive a car requiring premium fuel, the two grades were only 10-15 cents premium step in price. Now its 50 cents premium increment for each grade. Of course the owners manual and the sticker on the fuel door recommends 91+ but we don't get 91 octane in most stations. We get three here, 87, 89 and 93, so $2.99, $3.49 and $3.99 as of earlier this week. I.e. 91+ is a dollar a gallon more than 87. That adds up, seriously its like an extra $600 a year for me to fuel the Jaguars and most people drive a LOT more miles than I do. The XF seems to tolerate the 89, but the XJ8 definitely does not like it when I feed it anything less than the 93, like a baby gagging on Gerber pureed green beans.

I was actually thinking about buying a commuter beater. I've known for two years that my office is moving at the end of this month to a different building and I'm losing my parking garage during the day. I'm going to have to park out in the sun and weather starting in January. I didn't want to do that to the Jaguars so I was thinking about getting something common that I could park outside without worrying about it AND get like 30+ mpg on the cheapest fuel. But the used car market has also become insane right now too. I'd have to pay late model Jaguar prices for an old Honda beater.

I'm not sure I could tolerate a domestic or import economy car, my domestic partner has a mercedes s550, and a work car which is a chevy aveo and I cannot stand the aveo even though I like chevrolet. no power windows, no power locks, and GUTLESS.

as far as running on 89, it sat for a year so i may try 89 after a few tanks of 93. let the premium clean out the injectors.

Thumbs up

I routinely drive at 55 mph and save a lot of fuel, returning between 23 and 25 mpg (US).

What engine do you have? With the 3.0 I get 26-27 US-MPG driving at 80 MPH.

As an FYI, you may not get a response from the OP as he has not posted since December 2021...

" Our lovely powers to be in the white house needs to do something about fuel prices."
The Whitehouse has been doing something. The communists in your government are destroying the fuel industry to force you to buy some Electric POS. Fuel is 51-72% higher since Bozo took the seat. $4/Gallon is in line with many places for 93 octane high test. The NE and West coast are dumping a $3 tax on top of that, making them in the $6-7/gal. range. I've dumped Shell as a supplier for my company and myself. They raised their card interest rate to 34.24% and it is charged from the day you pump it, not when they get around to billing it. Even a 0 balance gets you a fee. I think the Shell bill last month was $1254. It is ZERO from now on. We are using BP and Chevron at our company. Today's number here is $3.29/regular and $3.74/high test.

So it's an old thread.

Not sure in other countries, but in Europe just use the cheapest fuel available. Also, the V6 and V8s non-supercharged take 95RON no problem.

Thanks for turning this helpful forum into a political comment. I really don’t her enough about Communists and conspiracies in the normal news and it’s so refreshing to hear you add your insights to the forum.
