Fuel gauge issue Jag S type 1999
Hi Guys,
I had 2 issues with my fuel system. 1st, the fuel gauge was erratic showing different levels between full and 1/4 . I replaced the Fuel sender(LHS of tank) and the erratic level was resolved.
The 2nd issue was the gauge would just randomly stop working altogether. I.e. working Ok then just died. I would turn the key off then on and the fuel gauge wouldn't even twitch or show any sign of life then the next time the gauge would work.
I thought by replacing the fuel sender might have resolved the issue but it is as though there is no power to the fuel gauge. I haven't seen this specific issue with just a dead gauge on this forum but have heard that perhaps there is an issue with the REM? Any suggestions please

Testing the S-Type Fuel Gauge
Hello Wayne . . . and is Tawa, Wellington in the Land of the Long White Cloud? If so, greetings from Coffs Harbour over on the West Island.
What do you know about S-Type's ETM? Do you have access to the workshop Manuals (JTIS), wiring diagrams etc? They are all here in the Stickys Download Area. As you may know, there are broadly 3 groups or eras of S-Types; each differentiated by MY with precisely known VIN# changes. Obviously, your car is of the first series. The ETM (Engineering Test Mode) is an integrated diagnostic system incorporated in the instrument cluster.
You must learn how to engage it (push in and hold trip button as you turn ignition key to ON but do not crank or start, then release trip button immediately message centre confirms ETM) Check that one of the options as you use A/B button on dash to scroll down the screens, is a Gauge Test. Use it. Observe gauges.Exit ETM by turning ignition key off and removing.
By using this test, you can at least identify whether the gauges themselves are faulty. If not, you can turn your attention to the sender under the rear seat.
Best wishes,
Ken

Thanks for comments. Yes. I am from Tawa, Wellington , New Zealand just of the east coast of Ozzy. The S type is a 1999 model and doesn't seem to have the ETM other than a very basic system check. The gauge dropped to E today for no reason so I quickly checked the message centre. It came up for 'Fuel computer data error'? Checking on other posts on here it seems to point towards the fuel sender unit which I replaced. Does this s type have 2 fuel sender units? I replaced the LHS one which seemed to fix the fluctuating gauge but should I be replacing the RHS pump? Does the RHS also incorporate a sender? Hmm. When the car was warm it took a bit longer to crank to start as well

OK, No ETM pre M45255 - I knew that - so brain fade working o/t today. Sorry for sidetracking you. Back to JTIS and you must refer to wiring diagrams as mentioned. Interesting note about poorer cranking. What is standing Battery Voltage? Battery age? Any other electrical functions misbehaving?
