Default gas gauge

Well, I've had my S type for a month, and I absolutely love it. Unfortunatly, I've had to drive in snow since I got it, so I haven't even been able to really see how it handles (As a side note, the S type beats an 09 Dodge Caravan in snow hands down). My only problem I've had so far is that when the gas gauge gets to around 1/4 tank it goes straight to "E". The DTE computer errors out as well. I've got a warrenty until June, but is this a common problem. I hate to send the car to the shop for a day if there is an easy fix.

Exercise the warranty..If there is something wrong have it fixed. That said, it sounds to me that it is a "float" or sending unit issue. One of the unique things about our cars is the shape of the tank. It is shaped like a saddle with a left and right side. I believe the R runs two fuel pumps while the standard cars run one fuel pump then a balancing valve on the other side. These units as a whole can be quite pricey and I haven't seen listings for parts so once a component goes bad you normally have to change them out as a unit. Here is a picture off of JaguarParts.com that shows the breakdown.

I concur - ride your warranty like a quarterhorse for as long as it is in effect. You will not regret it....

I had a similar problem a little over a year ago. The needle sporadically went from around 3/4 full to around 3/8 full. One time when it was near the 3/8 mark, I filled it up but was only able to get 5-6 gallons in it. Weird..but after several weeks ..(wasn't driving it much at that time) it was the needle (and not my mind) that was fluctuating. Thankfully, it was still under factory warranty so in it went.
The service guy said it would have been around $900 for fixin it without warranty..I don't have the paperwork in front of me at the moment...I'll look for it later on what parts they replaced.
BUT....get it to the dealer asap.

My gauges would act up every now and then so I had them look at it during the 20k service for a 04 STR. From the invoice, look like they found code PO460 Fuel Level sensors circuit malfunction. They replaced two sender units (XR8-54118 and XR8054120, two gaskets (xr8-5049) and two sets of leads (C2C30776 and C2C30777).

Funny thing is at 23K (3.4 years) or 3k miles after the sender repair, the fuel pumps then died (could drive the car for about 1/2 a mile before it died but would restart) when I was about 4 miles from home and about 4 miles from the dealer. Instead of a tow truck, I tried to drive it in and the car finally died for good right after a crossed the threshold hold into the dealer lot. The service writer had to get a few workers to push the car the rest of the way. I have always wondered if the two problems are some what correlated even though the sender and the fuel pump had different part #s.
