Be careful of this
Been there - done that! Fuel Float was defective and was a factory recall on most S-Types. Sorry I do not have the details any longer.
As I historically get around 30/31 MPG highway and 24/25 local, on my 2003, 4.2, it was not difficult to keep a calculation as to when I needed to refuel.
One day the inevitable happened. I ran out of fuel. Most embarrassing. First time in my 40+ years of driving!
End result, and I am certain I will not be totally accurate with this, but there just happened to be a Factory Technician from the UK at the dealer when I took the car in.
He came to me in the waiting room and told me a series of things through his questions. Not much power, correct? Yes. Erratic automatic transmission shifting? Yes. And a few other various and sundry things. Spot on with each.
He explained that when I ran out of fuel, the engine automatically adjusted the fuel mixture to a high level of air. This caused everything else connected to adjust as well. All was covered by Warranty as it was related to the Fuel Float, but the end result was nearly $12,000 USD to replace everything that needed replaced.
The dealer, which is some 70 interstate/freeway miles from where I reside. I did get stopped at 105 mph hour on the way home without having any idea that I was traveling at that speed - the vehicle was adjusted to run as though it were new!
