gearbox oil change
hi I wanted to give my gearbox service but my garage told me my stype has a life time and not to touch the gearbox is this true as I thought the gearbox also needs a service my car is a 2000 stype 4.0 V8 thanks
No such animal as "lifetime fluid" in any automatic transmission regardless of what the manufacturers tell you. The friction modifiers contained in all ATFs gradually wear out with time and heat cycles. When to change your ATF is a matter of personal preference. Some owners choose to do so with as few as 50,000 miles on the car. Most seem to perform the service between 70,000 and 100,000 miles. Do some reading here on the forum and make your preferred decision. With your car now pushing 14 years old, I would change the fluid sooner rather than later....
Change the oil (and maybe the garage, too)! It's quite cheap stuff for your box (Ford 5R55N) - details in the stickies in the Vehicle Spec PDF.
They are in a sense filled for life but actually that's "death". Don't play that game.
There's a sticky about DIY if you want to. A mite awkward as fill level has to be done just right. An auto transmission place should be OK doing it (or a different garage LOL).

thanks for ur comments just what I thought I found that strange being turned away cause I ask about changing the oil for my gear box. so ill go ahead with the gearbox change do these have filters aswell ???
Scott, yes, the 5R55N has a filter - ROck Auto has them for $15-$30. I expect they can be had from most parts-houses, though may be a special-order item.
