Default Is this a good price for an '07 R with 9k miles?

Hello all, I am new to the board but had previously owned an '05 S-Type R and had it for a few years. I miss it and wish i never sold it, hence I am looking for another one!

I found a Black/Black , 9370 miles, with the rare alumnimum interior for $32,000 asking price. Factory warranty valid until 12/2011 and it has Select Edition, extending the warranty until 12/2013. They won't go below that number and ive been working on them for about a month. It isn't listed online so I cant show pictures, but i happened to see it sitting outside one day while driving home. The dealership doesn't even use email to communicate with customers so i think they are real old-fashioned, perhaps a bunch of bozos.

My question is, do you think that is way too high? I see people here buying cars with 35k miles on them, certified, for 22,000 bucks. While i personally think that is too many miles, i am starting to think this car definately is not worth that much. Am i right? I do LOVE the combo though!

Well there's asking and then there's selling. I'm shopping and still deciding too. I don't think 35K is too many miles but that is about my limit. Mileage alone doesn't tell the whole story. Condition is often more important. But you can't unclock the miles and at 12-15K miles per year you can start deducting useful life on a year basis if you're going to keep it for a long time.

I personally wouldn't spend anything over $25K for any of these cars. I think you can do better. They don't exactly resell like hot cakes. I'm looking at an aluminum panel car tomorrow but in silver. I passed on one in green with the the black & tan combo and that was hard to do because as you say there aren't a lot of them. It was just too rough for my liking. But it was hard. So if that's the combo you want and you don't mind paying the extra 5-6K then go for it.

Really low mileage 07-08 cars seem to be in the low thirties at Jag dealers with the warranty. I think the Jag dealers have more fat in their pricing because of overhead and if that warranty is included I'm sure that's not inexpensive. I haven't ever seen a select edition car offered at $22K though? I've seen a couple of cars at Jag dealers now in the mid to high twenties and they weren't exactly stellar examples. I saw one at $33K that was low miles and clean but I'm just not willing to go that high. I'm in no hurry either. I can't stand black either so that eliminates 85% of the cars out there.

Good luck.

Bob S.

Kelleys Blue Book is listing over $36,000 for that vehicle without any warranty. If the vehicle checks out with no accidents, salvage blah blah seems like a pretty good deal.

I wouldn't pay that much, either. Decide what you're willing to pay and let the sales manager or general manager (not just a regular guy on the sales floor) know that's your best offer - tell him you've had an STR before and as a result, you know their weaknesses (high maintenance costs and high insurance premiums). Give him your contact information and tell him to call you if he decides to take your offer. Then walk away and resist the urge to stop in again to see the car. If it sits around for a couple of months or more with no takers, they'll eventually sell it to you. In the meantime, keep looking for STRs that are within the price range that you're willing to spend....

There's more involved to pricing than the book. You have described a pretty rare animal - try to find another one like it. I bought an '06 STR last month for the wife - $23,950 with the select warranty. I have been monitoring prices since then, as I am interested in one for myself. Asking prices are running more than I paid for mine, and '07's and '08's are hard to find. Prices are beginning to hold a little higher now, as off-lease cars are getting harder to find at the auctions. I think the price is reasonable - would probably consider it for myself. If you pass on it...

I think that's a great price.. I personally paid near that on my 07 that had only 6,500 miles. You still have the warranty plus the Select which is really worth it. So you are basically getting a brand new car for half the original sticker price. Really a steal for how rare the 07-08-'s are.

Good luck.

Thanks for all of your input! I was thinking about just going ahead and buying it. I got them down to $31,500 and they won't go a penny less. But i still am not sure. I do have to say I plan on selling the car in 2 years. How much money do you think i will lose if i sell it lets say in July 2012 with 35,000 miles on it?

Here's my take: It is VERY low mileage.

It has the Select Edition extended warranty.

The color combo makes you "hear the angels sing."

You know this make and model having previously owned one and you regret having sold it.

You will probably own this car for many years.

Why dicker, hem, haw, hesitate and maybe lose the car for a few bucks.

For $1000 or $1500 over the total time you will own the car, IMO, it's not worth it. If you really want THIS car, GO FOR IT! If you don't you'll regret it.

Oh, and BTW, it actually sounds like a fair price to me. Just my $.02 worth. YMMV

$8-10K. I just looked at a 50K mile 2005 same configuration interior. It's $22,500 and though it's very nice it isn't like a 9K miles car.

BTW, I really liked the Brembos a lot better on this car versus the two 06 cars I drove with way less miles. It was fast as hell and tight as drum too.
Zero tranmission lurch issues. A good sign for those who want to keep the car a long time.

I'm wondering why, having regretted getting rid of one, you'd only keep this one 2 years???

Reality is it will "drop like a rock". Look what similar cars two years older with mileage in the thirties are going for... Then knock 30% to 40% off that unless you plan on selling it yourself and not trade it. R's should hold their value better than my 3.0, but not by much.

So, if your major concern is depreciation, a very "fresh" car may not be the correct choice. The aluminum interior trim is EXTREMELY rare but don't expect that to help it's value.

All that said.. That is a tremendous find. If it checks out to be legit, the price is not bad. Remember, you'll find a bunch around with 40k plus on them. Finding one that fresh is really hard. It would make sense to buy it, pay it off, and keep it for many many years..Try to save so you don't need the money from it to get the next car. Hold on to an extraordinary Jaguar and save it for all to appreciate..

Wise words Jeff. I'm confident most of us purchased our "S's" for their beauty and fun factor. Buy the "Friggin" thing already! She sounds rare and beautiful.

Yup.... Both are more money and more miles than the OP's find... Plus neither of those have the super rare Aluminum Interior Trim!

Alright so the final price is $31,000 once you factor in the stupid processing fee that the dealer won't get rid of and they claim the state makes them put that there. Plus tax, it comes out to $33,000. Still think i should take it? I love the fact that its under warranty until almost 2014.

I guess the only thing that bothers me is resale value in 2 years. Are people still going to want these cars?

I forgot to mention they also just put brand new $800 tires on it and they apparently added that to the price. It wouldn't pass inspection without the tires.

The dealer told me the select edition warranty is technically worth $2,500 for the S-Type R cars, does that sound true? Thank you very much for the opinions here, I really appreciate it!

Just to chime in since I'm following your pursuit of a new car...that price seems pretty close to what it would be worth if you bought it yourself. Select covers almost everything, its a good value.

KBB is still valuing the vehicle at $36,000.00 (US) without a warranty.... If you have that kind of change to spend on a car, then.........

This is a not so old car with few miles so what was it about the tires that made them fail an inspection?
