TO DO A HARD REBOOT YOU HAVE TO DISCHARGE THE CAPACITORS IN THE ECU(ALL ECUS) AND TO CORRECTLY DISCHARGE A CAPACITOR WHICH IS NOTHING MORE THAN A BATTERY YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT A PATH TO GROUND. TO DO THAT DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL FROM THE BATTERY AND MOMENTARILY TOUCH IT TO THE STILL CONNECTED POSITIVE, THIS GIVES ALL THE CAPACITORS A PATH TO GROUND AND WITH ERASES ALL VOLATILE MEMORY.

 

Yes it will and if you do 1 where it wont, use the wrench in your hand for the taking loose the cable and make it an extension, afterall its metal too

Tried last night, it didn't work, I guess it's I'll check the sensors. Anyway, this is the whole story: The car has been sitting in my garage for almost a year, due to a legal matter with the shop that repaired the gearbox (long story) I warmed the car about once a week without any problems. The day before I finally took the car to the shop to re-repair the gearbox, the car wouldn't start due to a discharged battery so I had to jump-started it. It was then when the Traction Control Malfunction light came on along with the ABS one. After I got the car back, (I guess the shop had to jump-start the car again) the lights were still one and I knew that the battery needed replacement. I replaced the battery but the light were still on.

 

a hard reset is not to clear check engine, abs srs, lights etc....those are retain in NON volatile memory, youre only clearing volatile memory when you do a hard reset

 

I understand, just that I though the Traction Control Malfunction message in the Message Center was in the volatile memory and the problem was when the battery died thus after replacing the battery I needed to to a reset. Thanks a lot.

 

You can buy cheap scanners to read and clear your own codes though

 

I do have a pretty good scanner that I used before but it only works when the check engine light is on, when the message center displays a malfunction it doesn't read any codes.

 

Yeah thats true on chassis codes or jag specific, do you know a tech at the dealer you visit? I work with alot of customers no longer in warranty to do easy stuff and fast diag to let them know what theyre looking at. 2 fold so they dont go to someone who doesnt know jags, and to keep it affordable within reason to own. So in other owrds i would just go to the drive, pull the codes and let them know if i need to look at more indepth or give an est, and let em go. I dont like being look at as a reason the public think dealers are *******s. I meen no one calls the cardiologist a theif cause he's a specialist and charges alot more than a general practioner. Who do you want doing your heart diag, gen. Or spec????

 

Yeah, you are right. Although I'm not a mechanic, I do try to do all the work myself, not only save to some money but I also enjoy it. Down here in Puerto Rico, we only have one dealer so you can imagine how expensive it could be. Anyway, thanks for your advice and your time.
