Default HI! Please help with s-type r Transmission replace!

Hi, I am new to this forum but need help,
I have 2003 Jaguar S-type R with slipping transmission, and I found one on the Junk yard for good price but it is from 2004 Jaguar XJR.
It is the same 6speed ZF 6HP26 but sales department said it will not fit my car because according to VIN number it for cars from VIN G13491 or from M96294, my vin is M84907, I just don't understand why it will not fit and what is the difference in 2003 and 2004 and up transmissions. Sales department as well the Jaguar dealer cannot explain why it will not fit, they just say - different part numbers.
Please let me know if somebody knows what is it all about because I can get 2004 transmission very cheap and don’t want to get one from 2003 and spend almost 2000$.

Thanks

I can only guess - which is not ideal. The computer modules especially the PCM change dramatically over the years (not just the software, the hardware itself changes). The PCM and TCM talk all the time to each other to co-ordinate gear changes etc. So you may need ones that match.

You have what seems here to be a very rare (unique?) fault - are you sure it's been diagnosed correctly?

Check the fluid in the tranny? take the car to a tranny shop that understands the ZF 6HP26 well and have them look at it.

Default re transmission 2003 S-type R

Thanks for reply. Maybe you right, they have different control modules in 2003 and 2004.
I got P0781 code and was thinking maybe it needs TCM and EMC update. There is a delay in shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, but on Jaguar dealer they said - internal problem needs new transmission.

...you can't even get your tranny rebuilt on the ZF 6speed? I remember when I had my old lexus SC400(V8), my transmission was slipping. I just had a mechanic order the clutches, seals, etc..... and damm it was like brand spanking new! But of course it all comes down to how trained the mechanic is in doing a good rebuilt.

May I ask how many miles are on the STR? Did you check for any tranny leaks? B/c if your tranny fluid is low the transmission starts acting all weird on you, and you can easily damage one of the clutch plates inside it. Sadly there are a lot of factors that can lead to slippage.

Good luck to you.

Could be as simple as fluid needed. low fluid can cause that.

I forgot to mention that fluid level is good, I will also try to find transmission shop specializing in ZF 6HP26 but I’ve heard that they are not easy to rebuilt.

My S-Type R has 70000 miles, transmission shifts perfect in other gears, but 1st to 2nd, maybe transmission fluid change can help right now it's dark brown, not black but not red as well. I think my last chance to give it a try with the fully synthetic fluid.

Thanks price is good but in the notes at the bottom of the listing it says:

Excluding supercharged, so I guess it will not fit any supercharged cars. ((

..Dark brown is fine thats the original color of the ZF fluid. Putting in fresh tranny fluid might or might not work, its a long shot, but if I was you, I would get original ZF tranny fluid and give it a try. Its a bit expensive, and if it doesn't work, just remember to save the drained out ZF fluid you put in before doing a tranny change. There are lots of useful info about Transmission for the S type and R in the FAQs section, and here's a link where you can get ZF parts for the tranny as well as fluid for a decent price.

Thank you for the link with the tranny parts, they sell much cheaper than other websites or even eBay. All I need now is to find out what usually is wrong inside transmission when it slips in 1st to 2nd gear, I mean if it solenoids or clutches, and also find good cheap place who can fix it in Philadelphia area. Thing is that I found good transmission with very low miles on the junk yard and can get it for just 650$, but it’s from 2004 XJR and they say it probably won’t fit.

Default Read now before touching your trans with red fluid

Your trans fluid should not be red. Do a search on here about the ZF's. They use a special mineral based oil that is a light brown color. You either have to get the ZF brand fluid or a couple of guys have been using Castrol Multi Import trans fluid. ZF trans are very picky when it comes to fluid you put in some red synthetic you may as well kiss the trans bye bye. Do some more research before you start shelling out money that could potentially kill your trans altogether.

P0781? Hold on, don't mess with the box physically!!

Did you see these:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...072#post247094

http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=37009
which says:
This sounds like "Transmission MIL Illuminated with DTCs P0780 to P0785, P0829 Stored- Repair Procedure" (TSB JTB00072 v2) in which case it sounds very like a software fix.

If you have an OBD tool it may be able to tell you the current calibration (software) in your TCM. The cheap ELM327 can do it
That would help persuade a franchise to apply the TSB (or just tell them).

I agree with JagV8. I have attached a ZF transmission trouble shooting guide from Land Rover covering the 6HP transmission. It also says code P0781 is a software issue. Please see the attached PDF file. I think you might have a pretty cheap fix??

HI!

Thanks for all your help and support but when I left car on Jaguar dealer they said they did TCM and ECM update and also checked fluid level. To tell you the truth they did not want to do the reflash because car has 70000 miles and if the inside parts are worn to much after this procedure car can stuck in drive and don't move at all, so I cannot say if they did the update for sure I was not there but they charged me 180$.((

Thanks

I don't see how the reflash can be affected by mileage! I'm very suspicious of that claim. The TSB has NO mention of any mileage issues. It's very short, they just have to plug in IDS and reflash the TCM (no mention of doing the PCM).

$180 is hard to justify (English for rip off).

If you have an elm327 I can tell you how to read the calibration versions now in your car. I have a file which lists many of them and maybe we can tell if yours are newer/older.

Otherwise, a rebuild of the box done by a tranny specialist (NOT BY A JAG FRANCHISE) may be your best bet. Even an oil change might fix it, I guess, but I'd leave it to a specialist unless you get expert help here (or elsewhere).

Frankly I wonder if they did it or did it correctly.
