Default Hi.. Ron W. here. AC PROBS. Phooey...

New to Jags. My brother gave me his 2000 S TYPE V8 with 125k miles. Runs and drives great. My question is. If Gas charge, bottom side is nominal. 50 lbs +or - 4 lbs. Why is the compressor clutch not activating unless I jumper it at the relay socket? While it does spin the clutch. It does not sound like the compressor shaft is turning. No rpm changes or under a load type noises. Also no cold air. I installed new relay and 10 amp fuse is good. Wish I had a repair manual. Fixed income woes. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

50PSI at rest might be low. What was the ambient temp? The controller compares at rest pressure to ambient temp, to determine if the system has at least enough refrigerant to safely engage the compressor.

Coincidentally, I've been working on my epic HVAC troubleshooting guide, and that was one area I was just researching. Wracking my brains because I recently saw a chart of minimum pressure vs. ambient temp that would allow the compressor to run, but now I can't find it. Does that ring a bell for anybody?

Also buy yourself an elm 327 they are really cheap. It will allow you to read the engine codes abs and maybe the gearbox. You would just need to get a program to work with it. I use eobd-facile. You can also read the codes for your friends and neighbours to earn a few bucks.
