hum. is that about the time ford got out of the picture? i look on mine and most parts say fomoco on them. 2002 v-6 218000 miles. power steering pump wines. replaced all coils last week.trans a little slow going into gear. frt struts shot. cd player locked up.pass window stopped (took a hammer and hit it ,works now) still gets a 2/4 missfire sometimes. frt seat worn like most jags.why doesn't my m/b 240d seat wear with with 485000 miles on it? got $2400 in the s and not going to spend a penny more. need to put it in my 2000 xjr.

lol, After reading all this I'm not so sure I want to get a S-Type now ATM I'm looking at a 2003 Jaguar S-TYPE 3.0 That has
143,808 miles on it and he is asking $3,400
I'm also looking at a 2002 Jaguar X-TYPE
102,073 miles and asking price is $3,999 -
I'm not sure why but I really liked the X-Type, However both cars look good inside and out. The CarFax on the 2002 says "Total Loss Reported" So does that make it a R title? also CarFax has Odometer Check: DMV title problems reported. "Inconsistent mileage indicated" Are they saying more or less they rolled the miles back?. I think I had my eye on the 2002 due to low mileage as both cars look equally sweet to me. However I'm not so sure about the mileage now with what I read on CarFax. I also think asking 3,9 for the 2002 is high now. What do you guys think?
Also note to point out the 2003 has only had 2 owners and CarFax comes back with no problems. However its @ 143,808 Miles and from this thred that looks like when the car starts to brake down.. Please someone save me cause I would really like to buy this S-type but I'm not so sure now

Some definitive facts.
The Jaguar X-type AWD car was featured by Jeremy Clarkson in the BBC tv show "Top Gear" some years ago, and in his opinion was the best car in snow he'd ever driven.
The S-type is back wheel drive and will have the usual traction problems associated with that in situations of poor grip.
Re. vehicle longevity, the mileage on the clock (assuming it's genuine) is not the only pointer. It mostly depends on HOW those miles have been done.
Worst of all -- TAXI.
Best of all -- rep's car, all long distance.
How do you tell?
Look for the obvious shiny steering wheel, worn driver's seat at side, etc. etc., we all know the usuals. Add my own -- open and shut all the doors and see if the driver's door sounds markedly different from the rest. If the any door has a slightly "bouncy" effect, you can be sure the doors have been used a LOT. Like a taxi.
Finally, nowadays most cars will do high mileages (like a quarter million or more) if properly serviced. I tip I heard from an experienced Jag. mechanic only yesterday was to keep the engine oil right up to the dipstick mark when cold. On fast cornering (STR) low oil level can result in the oil pump sucking air as the oil sways to one side with centrifugal force. Result can be damaged big-ends esp. at high revs and max power.

Before you look at the AWD X-Type go to the forums and read up on them. The transfer case is a well known and expensive problem. Overall you will have less trouble with the 2003 and up S Type but of course no AWD.
Both cars are well over 100K miles and you will have repairs. Can't say they are worn out but all Jaguars are expensive to fix.
Can you DIY? If not I would not buy either one!

I have a 2006 S-Type 2.7 Diesel - 220k miles. But has full service history & was well looked after prior to me getting hold of it.
Had to replace the torque converter at the end of last year, so put a 2nd hand gearbox in as well while I was on. 2nd replacement timing belt at the same time.
Just replaced the climate control heater valve.
Otherwise she has been a good motor really!

got you all beat. 2002 s with 220000 miles. front struts.all coils. valve cover gaskets . upper rad hose, thermostat.and now trying to replace the 90% hose under the fuel rail. found a crack in lower injector housing. got one complete, housing ,rail, inj, off a 2002 x type for 80.00. anyone know if the injectors are the same. called jag and they told me you can't buy just the inj by itself.
have to get the whole thing, so they couldn't give the oem part #. hate to use old ones back as new ones have less than 80000 on them

You can buy Jaguar fuel injectors and parts plus get them cleaned and flowed if you want. Stay away from the dealer and do NOT put in used parts!
See this thread with all that information laid out.
It is easy to search!!

I am pushing 175000 miles on my Jaguar 2003 S Type. I am starting to get wear and tear items go bad. Nothing significant, but it does add up.
A very loud chirp had developed and nothing I did quiet the noise. My car is quiet, so it was embarrassing being at a traffic light with the awful noise. It turned out to be both the belt tensioner and the belt itself. Evidently the worn tensioner also wore the belt.
My AC at idle is still bad. Only way to fix that is replace the compressor. The mechanic went through everything, including the TBD with no success. he did find a piece of metal in the compressor that looks like part of a propeller fin. :-(
I really can't complain in the long run. My cat serves me well and I do my best to keep her purring. My wife says I don't let my cat sprint enough. She says I take her for walks. She says the cat is meant to run fast. Little does she know have taken the cat out for a long sprint every now and then.

High Mileage 2003 S-3 4.2
I've only owned the car for a few months but drive everyday and am very proactive on maintenance. I found a local shop owned by a Jaguar enthusiast with very reasonable prices (compared to the Jaguar dealer) He also has the equipment to properly service my year model. At purchase, I flushed every system containing fluids switching to BG products and replaced the battery as well as the radiator hoses, plugs and put on new tires. No issues were discovered along the way and all together this initial maintenance update was under $1600. (The dealer wanted over $4,000 for the same job!) BG warrenties any component using their products and stands behind it. (know this from previous Chryslers) At 132,000 plus miles, everything works on the car and no leaks or problems electrical or mechanical. I love the care and drive it over the C300 S Mercedes parked next to the Jag. From reading the responses here, I may just be lucky or just got a "good" one. Time will tell.
