I have a 2000 S-Type 3.0 with almost 140,000 miles. When I bought it 4 years ago it had 83,000. I recently changed jobs so I'll be putting MUCH fewer miles on it. As for your question, I have had a few problems with the cooling system and have had coils replaced several times. From what I can gather, the coil problems are fairly common with the older S-Types. I will be spending today replacing the water pump. I'm not complaining too much about the problems because they are usually fairly easy to fix. If I have to take the car to the garage for repairs it usually isn't too expensive. Since buying my S-Type I have averaged probably around $50 a month in repairs, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than a car payment. My next repair will be having the catalytic converters replaced. I have a feeling that that may be part of the reason for the coil problems.

AddMy wife's MY03 3.0 is going strong at 115K. We bought it three years and 40K miles ago. She drives it year 'round even in Cleveland, Ohio winters (if it is really bad I will trade her my Jeep Wrangler to drive to work).

The car has been reliable, but we had two close calls that might have resulted in big bills if not dealt with right away, which I have described in previous posts:
1. Replaced water pump hose with the "turret fitting" and reservoir;
2. Replaced cracked transmission oil pan and fluid.

I replaced the airbox and MAP sensor after I broke the tabs on the lid of the original changing the air filter (dooh!). A new assembly was the best option for the money. I can't blame the car for that one.

Just the other day had the front brake pads and rotors and serpentine belt done by my local mechanic Mark Bruss. If you live in NEO and do not know Mark, you should. He is a judge in our chapter of the JCNA, a factory trained tech and all around great guy - very honest and reasonable. Contact me and I will send his contact info.

The car needs a new steering casette/"clockspring" which has been ordered. We intend to keep this car for the foreseeable future, so as long as repairs average under $1000 per year its a deal. It runs great and is a delight to drive and use on long trips, and gets very good gas mileage with no oil useage to speak of.

I also finally replaced the original battery just a month ago - 11 years old it was still doing great but I decided not to keep pushing our luck.

I have 168K on my S-type.
My father just bought a new XJ so i bought the s-type from him.
No major motor issues. I know it was in the shop for various things.
He had it since 20K so its been awhile.

2001 S-type resurrected parts car with 159,000 miles on clock; no history or receipts. Tons of small repairs to bring it back after long neglect, but nothing new has gone wrong in the 6 months I've owned it, and the wife uses it as a daily driver. It's been a fun project and a great car to throw around. Compared to the many VW campers I've owned, it's already far more trustworthy.

2000 4.0L Sport w 161K here. No records, the young girl thought she blew the engine. It needed an ecu reflash, spark plugs, 2 coils on bank 1, cat/02 bank 1 (most of the cats guts were in the muffler which sounded like a bucket full of glass, one muffler, front lower ball joints, upper control arms, front outer tie rods, front/rear stabilizer end links, camber/castor kit, disc brakes/rotors, transmission flush, oil change, cabin filter but came with a new air filter . Now she just needs AC/Heater, dvd screen, headliner, demister grill, and trunk ajar light off (need to get in there and see what needs to be replaced or solder.

She's definitely fast and smooth to boot! Can't wait to take her auto crossing!

04 STR 130k miles, only major repair was a needed reseal of the intake plenums.

2001 4.0l with 130,459 and climbing. When I bought at auction it looked good and ran smooth, then took it for state inspection had to replace both front head lights, front rotors and pads and right front ball joint. Then the real work began, complete front suspension everything had to be replaced all the rubber was gone on everything. Replaced all 4 struts. Now I am working on the rear suspension. Its not as bad as the front, all joints are still tight and still has grease on them but the rubber is breaking away so I will work on the through the summer. Also the headliner fabric is coming down so this next. Other than that she runs great.

Default 2003 3.0L with 172,500 miles

I have a 2003 3.0 with 172,500 that I bought in Las Vegas in 2004 with about 35K on it. Has been for the most part a very reliable car with great highway 30+mpg and average about 20-21 mpg around town (not a big city mind you). Had to replace ABS unit but with advice from this forum and the experts here sourced one from a breaker yard for $200 and took less than 20 minutes to replace plus a beer for my buddy to pump the brakes while I bled them. (Jag dealer want $1700 of which $700 was labor for a 20 minute job! Replaced transmission pan/filter and new fluid at about 125K miles and those seals at the back end of the intake manifold. Also just the usual maintenance stuff: O2 sensors, brakes when needed, coil packs, and plugs, etc. Does't use any oil at all and runs great. Its been a great car but its time to let her go to a new home.

I do have that "growl and 100 rpm hunt" only when the tranny is cold but once it warms up it shifts like butter. Has anyone had luck with the transmission re-flash TSB to get rid of this? I understand there is one but its been superseded with a new one? Advice would be appreciated because it scares off buyers.

I bought one at 123,XXX and had to 130xxx still climbing till it crashed
Fixes on it
Serpentine belt
Brakes twice
Rotors
New lug nuts
2 oil changes
WHOLE FRONT SUSPENSION!
coolant reservoir cracked
And an issue with the hood not wanting to open! But I figured it our manually lol

Thru it all .... an amazing feeling car

That's the highest mileage I have heard on an STR.

How much money are you prepared to spend in order to find out?!

I have the base 3.0 version with about 88,500 miles on the clock. It will need new tires by autumn. My current plan is to keep the car through that final set of tires, probably 130,000 or so total miles. But that is only if the electronics and plastics continue to hold up without digging further into my checkbook. We'll see....

My Jaguar, bought used with second motor. Not sure what happened to the first one. Had to replace the throttle body, brakes and rotors. She currently has over 120,000 miles and runs perfect. I drive 90 miles to and from work. love this car.

I have a 2005 S Type R with 203,000 miles and still going strong. Yes, I've had some issues with it but nothing that broke the bank and it's been well worth it. Wouldn't trade that car for anything.

2005 S Type 146000 miles right front turn signal bulb keeps going out. This car gets way more attention that BMWs or Mercedes. I get the oil changed (synthetic only). Oh the gas door does not latch.

05 S-Type V8 Hit 100K today ! I felt an instant loss of performance once it hit 100K, as if it lost 100hp...lol just kidding car still runs great & smooth.
