Can anybody tell me just what the school of thought is on transmission fluid and filter change on my'05 S-type 3.0l. at 90k ODO. I'm getting conflicting info from dealer, ZF and Tampa transmission service center (not Aamco). Dealer won't touch it,too many miles for a flush and their trans service is only done with a flush. ZF rep says change without a flush because fluid will continue to degrade, and that I might get a few quirky shifts at first but should work itself out. Trans. ctr. says don't touch it. Please advise.

No flush! Stick with ZF recommendation

Change pan (That has filter in it), sleeve, drain and refill with either LG6 or MerconSP trans fluid. Read up, take to independent trans shop, not AMMCO.

^^ As advised above, do a proper ZF 6HP26 drain-and-fill, not a flush. Many of us ZF 6HP26 owners continue to have great success using Mercon SP ATF, available at any Ford dealership parts department for about $7 per quart. You will need 5 to 6 quarts for a proper drain-and-fill. If you decide to replace the pan and sleeve as well, you will need between 6 and 7 quarts....

Good luck and let us know how it goes....

Another vote to do just a drop and change as per ZF.

Yup, get the kit and take it to a qualified independent shop. That's what I did at 60K miles (now at 74K).

Very interesting thread. I bought a 03 STR, one owner, all dealer serviced, full records including the original window sticker with 112 miles and a 5 month old dealer installed ZF trans. I now have 151,000 miles on this car with two 4,000+ mile around the U.S. late summer trip as part of those miles.

Here's the BOTTOM LINE but at the top....I seem to have a desire to understand numbers and cost to, what I refer to as, the 4th. decimal point....just who I seem to be.

In years of observation I've found that there is a $150.00 per month or $1,800 per year average cost to own, drive, and maintain a vehicle, in Southern California at least (where I have lived for 50 years), in a 'respectable'/ ' dependable' condition. This would be a non warranty no payments car of whatever vintage. Only based on my personal experience.

Also, virtually all of the repair work that I've had done is 100K mile related....at least to the most extent.

That being said......if you add up the repairs that I my STR has had vs. time driven etc. (and yes it is my daily driver) my cost has been $122.00 per moth or 18.66% less than a standard projected cost. No car payment of course.

So, repairs.....here you go

1,500 miles into my ownership.....another new dealer installed ZF6 speed trans and torque converter....cost? $7,200.00 (under dealer warranty)

Coil packs and plugs, all 8.....at 123,000.....all new coil packs (in a Vegas parking lot at 118 deg. F.) again at 149,000 First set inc. plugs $575 ish, second 'parking lot job', $435 (self installed both times)

New headlight bulbs 128,000 parts $175 (self installed)

New 'J' box at 118,000 $700 (self installed

Rear wheel bearings and back brakes 128,000 ish $1,200.....indy installed

Hose under the super charger and all related parts inc. coolant recovery tank and hoses 128,000 $1,600 .....indy installed

Low pressure power steering hose 134,000.....$375 indy installed

Front brakes and rotors 138,000 $650 ish.....self installed

Crushed fore to aft trans lines (they were tweaked on a bad road) replaced $1150 indy installed

Rims restored and powdercoated... $475

To be done......

new valve cover gaskets...needed
front suspension,....lower ball joints, struts and 'who knows what else' potential cost?
parts wholesale...$1000 to $1800....once again....owner installed.
Pretty much 'to date'

03 STR qrtz sith dove 152K and counting

Btw.....regardless the repairs...yes...I still really enjoy and love my Jag.

Thank you all for the response to my question. I've decided to purchase the oem kit with ZF pan and lifeguard 6 and found an independent to install for $150.00.I will have just about $350.oo for the whole "no flush" job.

Mine is a 04 S-Type, 134K, owned since 2005 purchased with near 15k on the odometer. Live in Michigan so I store in the winter. No problems at all other tire replacement due to cracks in the sidewall.

Hard to believe the DCCV has not gone out in 134K and 14 years!
Got to be a record.

Our 2000 S has 104,000 miles on it.
i have replaced the air conditioning compressor, the rear electronics module, the fuel pump, and I need to replace the heater control valve. The paint is loosing a little clear coat on the rear roof and the leather seats are beginning to fray a bit. It still looks sweet though.

The engine purrs very nicely but a am a bit worried that the lifetime transmission fluid might be on borrowed time. The transmission shifts great though. Sport mode works great.

You are at the very end of life on the transmission fluid, at that mileage. Find a shop or DIY.

Thought some more on this topic and I have replaced a battery, normal maintenance. Tune up, wheel alignment are planned this year. I am an owner of high mileage vehicles as I commuted 175 miles daily before retiring. My recommendation is full synthetic oil, k&n air filter schedule change, silicon parts that move, drive 100+ occasionally to seat/lubricate gaskets. My 2004 SType is a good driving/riding vehicle. I hope everyone else on this thread feels the same way. My other vehicle is a 1999 GMC Yukon 317K.

2003 S Type R, short story. Bought one owner dealer maintained all records (inc window sticker) since new 112K on the car. I now have 155K on my STR.

I'd say the required repairs are if not all certainly mostly to do with 100K services so here you go.

New ZF trans installed from 1st. owner......failed.....under warranty....replaced at 'no charge' by Penske Jaguar in So. Cal. ($7,200.00 'no cost to me' value )

* Indicates repairs done by me.

*120K ish....new plugs and ignition coils
*Head light bulbs
Rear axle bearings
Hose under super charger as well as any related 'hard to get to' parts
Coolant tank and corresponding hoses
*'J' Box shifting unit
*Front break pads and rotors.
Rear, as well as parking brake pads, no rotors.

On the 'do' list

Thermostat
O2 sensor, front right bank
Front shocks (possible back shocks)
Valve cover gaskets
Lower ball joints and ? else
And there you go.

2003 STR Quartz in color 155K and counting
2000 S type 3.0L Mistral Blue 78K
1995 911/993.....Dark Gray Metalic.....mucho, mucho Miles 'and counting'

and others.

I bought my car with 120k mi. on the odo. with no proof the trans had ever been serviced. I've never had a problem in the 15k I've added. The only time I ever noticed any "clunk" was a few times on cruise control where it would down shift smoothly on a hill but have a very slight clunk when shifting back into a higher gear. I have an iCarsoft and have checked the trans temp on a 3hr drive @ 70-80mph and the temp doesn't go over 75C (167F) that is well below the 200F operating temp of the 6HP26 that makes me continue to feel like I don't want anyone messing with it for the fear of creating a problem that doesn't exist..

The various lubricating compounds contained in your original ATF have long since worn out, therefore your factory fill can no longer do a proper job with the clutch packs. Consider doing a couple of drain-and-fills with Mercon SP. No fluid is "lifetime" regardless of what the vehicle manufacturers' marketing departments tell you....

Thanks again to you all. Independent changed ZF pan and fluid. He said original fluid looked good, not burned. Timing was right for a service. Service ctr. was great and did it while I waited located close to home on Park Blvd and 34th st. N. Pinellas Park, FL. Original trans fluid had no issues and no after change issues with shifting. Love my Jag, still a head turner at 13yrs. old.

I have a 2003 STR and it is still in great shape, Just changed the DCCV. The air problem persisted and pulled and repair the climate module. Enjoyed driving it and freezing my way down the road. Replaced the water pump and now it seems to be perfect and in immaculate condition.

I have a little more than 144,000 miles on it (original transmission) and still love it. I do feel like the transmission may be on bowed time. I have babied it for years and she is still holding up. Even though the car may only be worth $4 or 5K, I might consider replacing the transmission if it finally goes. With that said, can anyone tell me what I should expect to pay for a transmission replacement? I live in Montana where there are no Jaguar dealers. I do most of the work on it, but a transmission is way above my pay grade. ;-)

Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

Hey Pete142...
You might try checking the transmission fluid level and topping up. Your symptoms could be due to low fluid.

I get a trans fault message when reversing down a very steep driveway in gear but not in neutral. However transmission started slipping badly at start of my last journey. Was only able to make it up the driveway in reverse (nose down). It was suggested by Klause at CTSC that my symptoms may be low fluid. I will also be checking for leaks along the cooler lines.
