Purchased my 2005 S-Type 3.0L V6 in June 2016 with 81,000 on it.
Now has almost 111,000
Have made a couple trips half way across the country and must say its a very nice driving and comfortable car.
Biggest repair issue was new throttle body and valve cover gaskets w/ spark plugs for a total of $1700
Will check into transmission fluid change tomorrow after reading up on it here.
Did get the Gear Box Fault a couple days ago.
Might be time for a new battery.
I'm retired and not much for DIY; oil changes but not much else.
Plan to keep this car for another 10 years hopefully.

My 2005 STR has 156k miles. Purchased 3 years ago with 74k miles to replace, yep another STR. Love this model, but this is the last one. I have to concede to another Jag.
I just dropped and rebuilt the ZF 6HP26 transmission, E pack had fried along with well worn sleeves (both common), I'll post another thread on this as I need to ask for input on TCM adaptions.
Driven 120 miles to and from Tracy CA daily, this car still has jaw dropping performance (Riski exhaust, inlet elbow and smaller SC pulley), looks great and is full-on sleeper unless you know, few do.
I don't see many S-Types let alone STR's so it is great to check in here and see the posts from people keeping these great cars going. Thank you for the inspiration!!

No, I am up in Wilton (Sacramento area). I noticed a nice 2005 STR for sale in Sac Craigslist recently.

06 S-type 130k miles
Asking $4500? Too many miles? Honest options appreciated.

If you can do repairs yourself, that is a fair price.....cars are cars and you never know when they are liable to break down....if that car is aok, then you have a great starting point....I believe there is a buyer's guide in the stickies for the most common problems...you can use that info to ask the seller some questions....you should start a new thread though, pertaining to your question to get more answers..,good luck

Here's the list of what I needed to do from 122K to 145k.....head light bulbs, J box, struts fore and aft, radio, driver window regulator, rear wheel bearings, Ignition coils and plugs, valve cover gaskets, thermostat, fuel filter, brake pads all around with new rotors in the front as well as having the super charger hose changed ( a big deal). The car had just received a new, dealer installed ZF trans when I bought it at 113k ($7,200) Let me be straight out no BS with you I really enjoy my STR. If I could not have done a lot of the maintenance myself and with the help of a very, very skilled and informed Jag friend I could never, ever justify the cost of repairs.
As it was/is I have just about $8,000 in repair work with much of that work not being done by a shop. My part was brakes, rotors, valve gaskets, struts...all 4, J box, radio, head light bulb replace and upgrade, ignition coils and plugs, window regulator, and more. Lovely lovely cars that require (at least my STR) working on/with.
So, my bottom line is if you can work on your own car or are willing spend some 'stout' coin then those things are to be taken in to very serious consideration. $4,300.00 for a 130K car under the right conditions may be an OK deal. I found that the 03 to 09 S Type 4.2L cars are very seldom for sale. That means that people like them, trust them, enough that they just don't want to part with them.
Anyway....nuff said. Hope this was of some help to you.

Good buy, except for repairs
Doesn't sound like a bad price but like previously said, be prepared for daunting repair charges if you're not a mechanic. I bought my 2005 V6 S-Type in 2015 with 81,000 miles in absolutely pristine condition for $6250 and it was trouble free for the first 2 years. Since then the cost of repairs has exceeded what I paid for it. Recent AC repair was over $3,200. Love the car and hope to keep it without any more majors for awhile.

My 4.0 has close to 115k miles on the clock. Not bad for a car built 18 years ago. Averaging one major repair annually (for example, 2 years ago, it was the throttle body. Last year, AC repair. This year, dual fuel pump assemblies).
I intend to keep this one long enough to put Historic Vehicle plates on. I see in this thread that the 3.0 is capable of racking up some serious miles. Just wondering about the 4.0 AJ8 engine...and how many miles can be squeezed out of it. I average about 5,000 miles per year at best, since I primarily work from home.

S-type
I have a 2000 jag S-type with 200,000+ miles on it and the only thing wrong with it is my rear shocks need replaced and my rear windows don't work, outside of that the car is mechanically sound, the car with the 3.0 really lacks in the power Department I mean the power is there but it's not like you know your big V8 but otherwise the car itself on smooth nice quiet easygoing ride for 200 plus thousand miles I say it's a great car
