On a 2005 S Type 4.2, what is the model number of the transmission? I read it somewhere that its one of the better ones, is that true?

Well I can't say it's better but the 6 speed ZF is and was used in a BUNCH of cars. From Bentley to Ford and all inbetween.

It has it's share of problems. Look for the "Lurch" if you are interested.

Cetainly a good unit but not trouble free!
