Default How to tell if I need a new water pump 2004 S Type

2004 Jaguar S type 6 cylinder

So I took my car to the local independent shop after being an idiot and putting that liquid radiator fix stuff in and then about a month later my low coolant light kept coming on but the reservoir was full. I thought perhaps there was a clog as a result of this. The shop is saying my water pump needs replaced, I need a radiator flush (makes sense), a new thermostat, a new coolant reservoir with a new sensor cuz they say my low coolant sensor is saying low coolant when it is not. They are quoting me around $600 for all of this after I just paid another $550 for a transmission service that I needed and requested. This just seems like they want to replace everything and I wanted to see how I can tell if these things really needs replaced or not. Any help would be appreciated.

In general no the water pumps last a long time.
How many miles on your car?

But I think you are right about the mistake. I really don't know what that stop leak would do. I have used it in the past on cheap cars but with the cost of Jaguar parts I am much more picky in how I repair it.

You might just have to suck it up and pay the "stupid" tax! Don't feel bad we all pay this at one time or another!

If the only fault is a low coolant light and the garage says that it's due to a faulty sensor- why are they doing all that other stuff?

Car has 81000 miles and the garage said the water pump has a slight leak and low flow (I am not sure how they determined that). They said everything else was absolutely necessary because I used the stop leak. I know I shouldn't have done it but I don't really have a another $600 for this after the $550 transmission service. They made a list of another $1000 more in work that needed done too but I said I can't afford $2200 so I am trying to do whatever I can to keep it running without ruining the car. They said it also needs something done with the rear stabilizer bar at 75 each times 2 etc etc. I know the temperature gauge isn't real accurate but it hasn't over heated so I am not sure if I have to replace the water pump, thermostat, etc right now or not but the shop says it is definitely needed. Thanks for the help and any other help is appreciated. Thoughts? Is there a way for me to check if this is all needed? Thanks again

This all started cuz the low coolant light and a leak that they say is coming from the water pump.

And I don't know where the leak was when I added the additive sorry, I just know I was losing enough coolant to have to top it off every other day before adding the stop leak. Once I added it it stopped leaking but about a month later the low coolant light started coming on despite the reservoir being full.

You replace a waterpump when
1) it dont pump water
2) it leaks water
3) its sounds like a garbage disposal
4)replace the upper radiator matrix because the black plastic fitting ontop of the assembly is going to snap off when they look at it
v6 water pump do generally fail for leaks, let them go long enough and they will be noisy too. Low flow? Only if you plugged **** up. I think that comment was just to make a trifecta. But otherwise all sounds reasonable to me, and cheap. WOW I said **** and it wasnt %^&$

When mine was leaking from the shaft seal you could see the where the line of coolant was spraying on the casing that protrudes underneath the pump.
I wasn't home at the time and SWMBO kept it going for several weeks by keeping an eye on the coolant and topping up every couple of days.
She also had strict instructions to stop at the first hint of overheating.

Verify for yourself if it is/is not leaking. If no, leave it alone.

I will check if I can see any accumulation of coolant anywhere or it leaking. I do have a question about the alleged low flow from the water pump. When I took off the bleeder valve for the coolant recently coolant shot out quickly and continuously. I don't know much about the water pump but wouldn't a strong continuous flow of coolant from the open bleeder valve mean it has good flow or is the coolant that comes out of the bleeder valve not related to the flow of the water pump? Thanks again

If your not losing water anymore you don't have a leak.
