I rebuild my engine now I am getting P0340 and P0341

I got a 2000 S type with 4.0L with 125k.When I purchase the car the rod bearing was gone so I got the crank welded and ground to green bearing spec
Put it together and was getting some codes.All of them I worked out but P0340 and P0341.The car starts,run but the rpm goes up and down
between 600 and 950 when idling.Does not want to go more than 2000 rpm.I know it is because of the codes.I am pretty sure I did the timing correct.My ? is :Is that the right or left side(driver or passanger)3.Can be a loose ground(I took the engine out) and which one.

P0340 and P0341
P0340 is bank 1 CMP circuit malfunction (Right hand camshaft position sensor)
P0341 is bank 2 CMP circuit malfunction (left hand sensor)

The CMP sensor has probably not been connected again since you took the engine out or it has been damaged.

I checked the cable and the harness on both sensors are conected.is it posable to give me a code if i put the right one on the oposite side and vice versa

Do you know if the codes could have been there before you did any work? There was a recall to reflash the car because of software that miscounts between the two camshaft sensors. Brief details here:

I took it apart to find out I didn't adjust the VVT in fully retarded position.Now the motor purrs like the real kitten

I have an 02 S-type 4.0L as a second car, and it's giving me some troubles. It stalls out in the middle of driving it sometimes, like you can press the gas and nothing will happen for a bit then it kicks back in and starts driving. It sounds electrical to me. It had the same symptoms before when I had a bad #2 coil. Replaced it then and it went away.

My mechanic read the following 3 codes:

P0308 - Misfire Cylinder 8
P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1
P1383 - Variable Cam Timing Overretarded Bank 1

P0308 - I've had the misfire cylinder code on #2 before about 6 months ago, replaced the coil and it went away. I remember reading that the 02 s-types had probs with the Coils.

I've no doubts it's the #8 coil for this problem, and even better Drivewire has a whole set of 8 (16) for only $100 so I think i'll replace them all this time with new spark plugs.

P0430 - Mechanic said to just pick up a new cat for bank 1, which I can find for about $218-$250 for this car on drivewire, any other ideas? Could my 02 sensor be toast also?

Yes the One of the VVT unit was not wind up to the specs. The engine was trying to compensate and that wasn't possible.I took the car apart and find that one side the vvt was in the opposite side.

This is why I hate the dealers. The Shop Manager told me this was the transmission issue. This is their only resolution to transmission problems replacing them. I dont know why they not bankrupt by now as many trannys they through in s and x types

anyway I have the same problem I will replace all coils at some point, This is a very dangerous car. Your expecting to floor it and squeeze between 2 cars 1 in your blind spot one infront of you and you menu-ever to switch lanes and gas it and nothing happens.
When I make sharp turns or turn the wheel all the way to turn it stalls putt's, not something you want happening in 4 oclock traffic on a busy street.

far as your o2 sensor i got problems with that too. I replaced 3 and it still wants more. Check engine light on right now begging for a 4th in as many months.

The recent posts all sound like they are probably air leaks. Possibly coils. Probably not trans.

Number 1: Not all dealers are created equal. I have found decent ones for every car I've owned.

Number2: It sounds like you are throwing parts at your car without doing proper diagnosis work.... Hmmm, the same thing you just complained about in number 1....

OK, I think you are wise to just buck up and change all the coils. You are correct that there were early cars that had coil issues... Since they applied the same type of coils as Ford, you will find that Ford's had the same issues.

I'm not sure what bank number 8 is on, but remember, a miss-fire can trigger O2 and timing faults as the PCM tries to compensate for the miss and added raw fuel in the exhaust stream. The fact that it is all happening on Bank 1 would lead me to believe those codes are a side effect of an issue and not direct.

Do the coils first, then give the OBD system a chance to run it's monitors and see if the other codes clear up before throwing a bunch of money at it.

Im having the same issue as u after a rebuild can u tell me more about setting the vvt. I'm about to go inside and read my jtis manual but help is appreciated. Sucks I have to tear it back apart

Let me add my $0.02 on the above:

1) P0308 - Cyl #8 misfire - driver's side - rear cylinder. When you go to check the coil - if you see any hint of oil residue - you have to change the cam cover gasket and spark well seals. Hopefully, this check was done for Cyl #2 coil (passenger side - 2nd coil from front of engine)

2) As far as replacing all coils (especially with aftermarket parts) - I would highly advise against doing that. Aftermarket coils for these cars suck! I would get a quality coil (Either Jaguar OEM - XR827823 or Ford Motorcraft - or even the NAPA - Echlin series coil) and replace Cyl #8 and see what happens. Most important thing here is to make sure those spark well seals are not leaking oil into the cylinders or any efforts to replace coils will be for nothing as the oil will certainly short them out.

3) P0430 - Could be showing (bank 2 - driver's side) due to the Cyl #8 misfiring issue. Get the coil changed and clear out code(s) and see if the P0430 goes away on its own. Changing coil #8 ASAP should be priority one. By the way - replacement cat converters are not as good as OEM. Just remember, the longer you drive with the misfiring issue - the odds increase that there will be damage to that respective cat converter.

4) P1383 - VVT solenoid retard issue (passenger side) - Try this (after addressing all above): purchase engine flush - flush at idle (engine cold) for 20 - 25 mins - drain oil, purchase cheap 5W20 oil (6 qts) and sub the 1 qt w/ Dexron V or VI trans fluid - 6.9 qts total for 4.0 V8 and drive normal. The small VVT passages get clogged with oil gunk. The trans fluid is highly detergent and will eventually clear out those passages - this method takes a while - but if the P1383 code just showed up recently - this will do the trick quickly.

Once the P1383 code goes away - always use engine flush before changing oil.

I sub 1 qt of trans fluid about 1K before my next oil change as it keeps things clean internally. I've been using this method for about 25K miles now (I had a P1388) I recently changed the cam cover - passenger side and I was pleasantly suprised how clean things were on the inside - no gunk build up...

From what I understand the NAPA Echlin coils carry a 3 year warranty... personally, I only use OEM Jaguar or Ford Motorcraft...
