Information and data on S-type Wheel/Tire sizes
Surely any tyre specified as a factory option, and so any tyre within those dimensions, will not confuse the sensors. An owner may have 18" summer wheels and tyres (245/40 R18) and 16" winter wheels and tyres (225/55 R16), like me, and can switch between them without having to change settings in the ECU etc.
I doubt one will be able to feel much difference between slightly different sized tyres on the same rims assuming the tyres themselves are the same manufacturer and model. Even going from 16" Goodyear Eagle F1 summers to Goodyear Eagle F1A 18" summers was not hugely different and an S-Type is no 911.
The other point to remember is that a tyre size is a nominal size and two manufacturers may produce tyres that a slightly different even though the nominal size printed on the side is the same. Hence the car's sensors can't be set to be too fussy. However, there lies one obvious problem of mixing tyres on a car!

It would be extremely useful to add the same data for the stock V6 16" wheels for anyone considering an upgrade to STR 17" or 18" wheels.
There ars some bargains with used Jaguar wheelsets come up on ebay.

Just FYI, I am running a set of stock XF 18" wheels on my S-Type. The only difference is that they came shod with 245/45-18 rather than the stock 245/40/18.
No problem, other than my speedo reading 4-5 mph low... ;-)

Go back to the first post in this thread and write down the wheel offsets for the STR staggered wheels.
Then compare to the XF published offsets. Enough XF wheel combinations have been created that I am sure one of the XF wheels will fit.

Probably depends most on offsets. I don't imagine the fender well space is much different between the r's and non r's. And thoes are the same as the stock r rims. Also I'm running 265/40 on front and 285/40 on rear and I have no tc issues. Didn't have problems with 255/40 on front either. I did have problems with 245/45 fronts and 265/35 rears so I think as long as the front to rear ratio is close it's ok
My S type currently has 225/55 16 tires Pirelli P6000 all round and spare.
For comfort XJ use 225/70 16 can I fit this size on an S type 16 Spirit rim?
The ride in an XJ with that size tyre is sublime riding on air!

From what I understand, the 17x71/2 inch wheels came with 235/17 inch tires. The 8 inch wide rims came with 245 width tires. The 245 tires will fit on the 71/2 inch wheels but will float around a bit when cornering because they are wider than the wheels. That's just what I've been told

Ride quality between cars cannot simply be attributed to the tyres. May I ask how old the P6000 are on your car? If old and have gone hard, a new set of tyres will improve ride significantly. Also good alignment ensures the best ride quality. If your car is not riding well on 55 series tyres, I would check the tyres, alignment and make sure that no suspension component needs replacing.
Well, a lower offset than standard means it will stick out further, right? So, it may well bolt on and clear the calipers and maybe not catch the bodywork. However, there will be extra load on the suspension as the track changes quite a bit (30mm or so). Also, in some countries, as the tyres now stick out too far, it will be a change too far and be deemed illegal.
