Default Installing new water pump on V8 4.0

I am looking advice on how to installed updated water pump on a V8 4.0. There seems to be some differences when comparing the old and new pumps.

The old one is installed with relatively thick (1mm or so) gasket and the new one comes with quite thin gasket already attached to the pump. Also the old pump has a rubber o-ring that goes inside the engne block, whereas the new one has no such thing around the neck.

Should I keep the old gasket too in addition to the new one? If the old one is discarded, then the bolts are too long and will not tighten down. What about the o-ring or lack of it? Is that a problem or the gaskets should hold just fine without them?

Thanks for any advice. I am sure many members have done already this on their cars.

Did you ever figure this out? I am also curious about the O-Ring as well.

Yes the old gasket is removed ,and the new on is placed with the blue sealer very thin around the holes where the gasket is placed.

I used the same solution. Check that the bolts are not too long when installing the new pump (thinner gasket and maybe the pump is also a slightly thinner). In my car I had to shorten the bolts a bit to work.

tot - I installed the water pump today. I used hylomar on the thin metal gasket (for insurance) and the bolts tightened the water pump to the block via spec- no issues whatsoever with the bolts. Now, I'm in a holding pattern for my aluminum thermostat housing upgrade and thermostat - I figure I might as well get these items tackled as well.

Thanks...
