John new to the forum and looking to buy type r this week
hey everybody my name is John from Michigan, I am looking at a grey 2005 Jaguar S Type R 4.2 supercharged. Currently has 137000 miles. Carfax shows it has been in 2 accidents, both were minor.the guy was asking 8500 but is willing to take 6500. I basically know nothing about these cars except the little research I have done on the specs. Is there anything I should look out for? It seems like a great deal but can be a gamble. The guy that currently owns it now has only owned it a few months, he said his brother works at a dealership and he basically just paid the trade in value that the dealership was going to give the guy which was 5500. I am kind of skeptical as to why he is selling to sell for so cheap or it just may be that he doesn't care to make too much on the car. The car blue books for 8,800 in good condition. He says all it needs is a wind shield which is about $300 for the cars. Any help or tips or anything else would be appreciated. I am kind of lost it almost seems like a steal at 6500 but I may be wrong. Should I hurry and jump on it or take my time
Slow down, do not be pressured, and do your due diligence. You have much to learn, and there is a ton of information here that you need to read, digest, and then decide if:
1. an STR works for you, and
2. this is the right STR for you to purchase.
Read and study the FAQ threads at the top of this section to learn about the S-Type's strengths and weaknesses. Be aware that if you cannot do the bulk of the required maintenance and repairs on this car yourself, it will clean out your checkbook in a flash....
You also need to do some digging to put together the service history on this car. If you are not willing to do so, or if you run into too many dead ends and blank spots, then quickly walk away....

^^^ Great advice Jon.^^^
Welcome to the forum John from Michigan, please heed Jon's advice above.
Believe it or not but Jaguar says the supercharger on the STRs is rated for around 100,000 miles. Of course there are STRs with alot more miles running fine out there. Just keep that in mind though. 137,000 miles is a bit much for an 05. My 05 STR has 59k! Although im sure the one previous owner who was in his 60s helped keep the miles down lol. Turn the car on and try to feel any knocking of the engine, if the car seems to be shaking a bit on start up then the Engine mounts are bad. The engine mounts on the STR are hydraulic, with an average life of 100k miles. They are inexpensive but labor for it isent, requires lifting up the engine. If the car has navigation check what version is in the DVD player in the trunk. Your looking for at least 2010 or newer. If it has an 05 dvd in there, the navigation wont have any roads, houses etc built since 05! A new navigation DVD is about $100.00 on ebay. With 137,000 miles im sure every oxygen sensor and coil kit has been replaced, although i would take it to a mechanic and have him double check. Run that transmission up and down at varying speeds. The 6 speed ZF transmission is a great one, but also expensive. Check to see if the headlights move when turned on. If they dont aim down then up, make sure they are at least aimed up. Also if they are not moving it will keep the car from passing any state inspections.
I think I need to start a separate thread and have it stickied, because I am always referring people back to this post:
