Default Limp Mode 2002 4.0

I have a 2002 S-Type 4.0L, I have driven it under 300 miles.

On the way to work the amber engine warning light came on.
Everything else was fine. No loss in power, etc.

It was raining lightly, had car wash (machine wash) today, light didnt happen.

I have an OBDII tester at home but I dont see where to plug it into (I'm not at home until tomorrow, have to drive there)

Without codes, any guess on if this may be the start of a "limp mode"?

Ive read every page of this thread, it worries me now. if I miss my flight because of my car, I'm screwed.

- Where is the OBD connector? DLed a couple guides, dont see it. OBD Locations website isnt clear either
- If it does enter limp mode, should I NOT try and clear the codes unless I'm "stranded"? I dont want to add to dealership diagnostic time.

Thanks!

Guessing is not wise! I'd guess battery if I had to guess.

OBD port is by your shin/ankle.

A huge worry on the 4.0 is that they have tensioners which fail and destroy the engine - they need changing (with guides etc) to the metal-bodied ones. I hope what you're seeing isn't related to that!

You mention dealer... any car this age can be a money pit if you don't DIY most things. That's why they're so cheap to buy.

Thanks so much! I'll get it into the dealer ASAP, I'll get a battery for the heck of it first. I was a Ford mechanic (ASSET schooling) but changed careers after always fighting with the company to get paid. I'll still DIY, but not when its cold . No hobbies, no debt, not married, so money is not much of a concern lol.

Assuming this is the tensioner you'd meant?

I'll check and see if this is related to the OP and check back. Thanks!

Well that's an XJ so not the same car. All S-Type 4.0 have the problem. Stick to this forum when you can.

If you were a mechanic you know how important the proper repair manuals are.

We are lucky to have both the JTIS and the JEPC free in this site. These are the factory shop manual and parts list. Get both of them on your computer ASAP. Look at the top of the forum for JTIS.

I have to say how much mechanic work did you do? ALL OBDII connectors by law are within 3' of the ignition key. Did your look? It faces down and is to the right of the steering wheel.

Money will be a concern once the dealer hands you an "estimate"...

Well, under the hood can be 3' also. I was all OBD1 and EEC-IV and changed careers in 1992 The connector was moved and ty-wrapped up (Maybe the driver kept kicking it?), but I'd found it. T-stat probably stuck open causing the code (ECT). Drove it in cold weather for the first time today, never got a lot of heat out of it.So, no limp mode thank god!

It has to be in the cabin. Forget pre-OBD II.
