Hey guys I am looking for some advice. I have poked around on the forum and still have some general questions. I have never owned a Jag before, I have owned Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Saab, Volvo, and Lexus. I am sold on Lexus (for life)and my wife owns a Volvo now. However we both have always loved the look of a Jag but have heard they are not a durable car at all. After some checking on the net I see these are now getting pretty high ratings.

We are considering buying a 3.0 S Type. The car we be around a 01 to 03 with less than 70k miles. We would do a pre purchase inspection by a certified tech.

I know with a lot of cars the timing belt is a concern and can be expensive to change. Since this has a chain does it need changing?

My question is pretty general and was wondering if overall these cars are dependable? Because of what I currently own or have owned I realize they can be expensive to work on if you do have a problem. Keep in mind I am very picky about my cars and take GREAT care of them with correct maintiance. How would you guys rate them over all if 10 was bullet proof and 1 was junk? Anything to look for in general?

Thank you for the post. So the 03 and newer has had the bugs worked out? What changed for 03 with the tranny, TB retainer, and coils? Thanks for the info.
