Default Mechanic Special STR - Need some advise

I got the STR form craigslist with known issues. Previous owner said it is a faild headgasket. He started work on it but got overwhelmed. So I picked it up for 2K and it was in pieces. I couldnt start the car but we were able to get power back on so that I could load it onto the Autotransport. I rolled it into my garage when I got home.

It was at the point where the coolant was drained. Cooling hoses were removed the whole front bumper headlight and grill and panels were all removed. Also the right hand valve cover, Cops and plugs were removed. Several harness connectors were removed.

I was able to get most of it back together however the is one section of harness I have yet to connect. It has 3 connectors on it. One goes to a coolant bypass another goes to the Coolant Expansion Tank Level sensor. Do you know where the last connector goes. Any help with the routing of the main harnesses on the Right hand side of the engine would be helpful also.

There is also a valve looking object that is connected to the Botton right corner of the radiator section and it is just dangling there. In the same area is also a Metal Bracket shapped like a flattend Lower case "h". I think it may be for the Valve looking object. I can't figure out if they should go together if so How and where does it mount to?

Last I know I have a head gasket issue due to the Mixing of coolant with oil on the dipstick.

I plugged in the code reader and got a ton of misfires codes and some codes for the disconnected harnesses.

Should I be investing time looking at other possible causes for the Oil/Coolant mix. The coolant was drained before I got the car so I don't know if the oil is mixing with the coolant.

I was able to start the car once I most of the major components reconnected. I ran it briefly help isolat the problems further. It runs but its rough. Definitely more than one cylinder misfiring possibly all 4 in bank A.

It is currently up on ramps. I plan to roll it back down. Get the ramps adjusted and Drive it back up onto the ramps. Is there anything I should be concerned about running it briefly without any coolant?

I've done a the headgaskets before on my 2000 XKR. It's much tighter in the STR. Mut I'm fairly confident that I can get through it.

Any other pointers before I commence work. This is the 3rd Jaguar I've owned. I have an 2000 XKR and a 2005 X-Type Sportwagon. I'm hooked on Jaguars and I cant wait to get the STR running right.

If it is the one I am thinking, it might be to the DCCV.

Here is a shot of it

The valve gizmo will be the DCCV (dual coolant control valve) any chance your connector goes there?

You have confirmed coolant / oil mix?

Does it smoke when it fires? You can run it for a min or two with no coolant. Think of it as thermostat closed.

Who diagnosed this car?

Take care,

George

Grab JTIS. It's on here or ebay or (etc). It has all the strip down stuff and circuit diagrams etc. Oh, OBD codes PDFs as well. Anything else, ask and someone likely knows.

If you mean right as in car right hand, probably a coolant pump. Could be the SC pump or aux one. JTIS will show you.

Go for it! Which year is it?

I diagnosed the car once I got it running. Yes, it was risky investment I know but I'm up for the challenge. It's does smoke when running. What else can I do? I've confirmed coolant is in with the Oil. Got Mickshake on teh Dipstick and Oil fill cap.

Yes Right as if you were in the drivers seat in th NA Models. Where exactly are these Aux and SC pumps located?

Pics are in JTIS / Tech Guides but roughly bottom right rear corner of radiators as I recall.

Best I can manage right now https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...51/#post568935

I have to caution against running the engine with no coolant.

All liquid cooled engine and especially 'delicate' aluminum engines are dependant on the presence of coolant to distribute the heat evenly throughout the block and heads. This is essential to eliminate hot spots and uneven expansion/warping. Although the engine may be run for only a minute or two, the heat that conducts through the cylinder walls and heads is present for hours afterwards.

Not worth taking a chance. Fill it with plain water and drain it later if required.

The connector goes to the Supercharger Coolant pump. Thanks for all your help!

I'm still in the process of tearing it. I had to take a break to research an alternatve to the Harmonic Balancer locking tool. Plus I posed a nother thread about the Jatis Procedure as it does not specify the removal of the Supercharger or intake manaifold on the STR. Since I have done this before on my XKR, I was wondering if it was omitted in error. Could the redesign between the 4.0 and 4.2 engines allow for the SC and Intake manifolds to remain in place for Head Gasket repairs?
