Mileage Survey- replies welcome!
man, how the hell are you 4.2l sc guys getting that good of mileage? When I do the math, I'm getting about 16-17mpg on mixed driving and I don't think I've ever gotten over 20 even keeping my foot out of it on the highway. Does the 2004 even have the mileage computer? I need to get to know my car better!
Don't forget that every time you (or anyone) clicks to read new answers on the post it increases the total count by one. It could be that the 20 or so people that did post are just coming back to see what the others have said. I thought you did quite well with the numbers of replies actually.
2005 4.2L
Two weeks ago we went from Newport News, Va to Kane, Pa via Southern Maryland--lots of stop and go and then into the mountains --When I was driving we averaged 27mpg (about 3 tanks of gas round trip:900 miles or so) The husband averages a little less though due to driving styles.
When I topped up this afternoon my computer gave me a range of 420 miles, it'll end up more like 340 miles and that's 85% in town driving and I'm prone to running the AC on the lower vents with all the windows open.

Haven't had her long but I seem to be getting about 18 city and 25 or so highway.
That's UK gallons btw, I'm not sure how big a difference there is. My old 535i made about 13mpg in the city so I'm well happy with these numbers!

Heavy urban around town traffic worst to best 9-14
Highway with cruise on light traffic best ever was 23 usually it's 21-22mpg.
I have no idea how those other people are getting better highway mileage with a STR. Maybe there's no alcohol in their gas? My gas tank sensors are new and all the manual calculations match the car's trip computer.
28K miles.

Something is funny about this ...

I seem to be in the same ballpark as you. I did get 25mpg on a long drive from Pgh to South Carolina last year per onboard computer. That only happened once though and I haven't come close to that kind of mileage again. Come to think of it, I had the wrong size tires on the rear (came with the car when purchased and has since been fitted with the proper size) for that trip, so maybe that figure wasn't accurate. I was at 21.7 mpg on recent 250 mile mostly highway return trip, at somewhat sane speeds. I don't think 25mpg is possible for this car anymore, at least mine anyway.
I don't understand how other STRs can get several mpg better than this?
That's way too much of a variation given today's technology.
All I can use is my experience. I did one round trip of almost all highway driving and managed 425 miles on one tank and put 16 gallons in when I was done; and that included one run up to 145 but the rest was cruising 65-80. Maybe I had a tailwind in both directions or something. I typically drive about 60/40 highway/city and get around 300-320 miles on each tank and I take it a little easy but I definitely don't grandma it.
