Schultz, LOL! Bob, def. talking about the car. I was in contact with the 2003 or 2004 XJR owner who has a YouTube of his cat on the dyno. It runs a 1.5 pulley and I believe aftermarket rear boxes, helping it make 425+ chp. He recommends periodic hard re-sets to purge stale adaptive learning. Whew!(wiping sweat from brow) I can't tell you how "Hard" it was to keep "It" clean...Isn't that what she said?

This is why I hate the adaptive learning stuff so much. Let me decide damn it!

I figure if I hadn't disconnected the battery when I did then in about another year the GD car would have barely been able to back out of the driveway!

What's been working well for me is staying away from the sport button until needed.

I've been doing all my driving in "normal" so I don't have to teach blandness to "Sport"

I finally have the car taught in sport to shift at just over 6k from 1-2 and I don't need grandma driving to spoil it again.

According to the ZF manual only sport mode is truly adaptive.

The adaptive tuning happens in the PCM side of things.

Sport opens the PCM TCM and CATS into adaptive learning from what I can tell

Well I knew this wasn't going to just go away.

The alternator is still putting out fine but the battery was getting low again.

One thing we noticed since the last time is that headlamps were staying on longer than normal and I "finally" noticed that I had them set for a special extended delay off period via the stalk.

So I wonder if this has anything to do with this issue? On the surface it shouldn't but I now have the lights manually off and will leave it that way and try again.

I'm also going to try leaving the car in normal mode for around town driving and use sport only when I feel like it to see if Mafioso is on to something here.

If there's another episode I guess it's time to perform a load check and then if that's negative it must be the battery. It does take a while to get depleted.

Wellllll, it doesn't HAVE to be. Granted, usually it IS that. (As you & Bob know lol - this is for the lurkers and future readers.)

A smallish continued drain, maybe? (Modules not going to sleep.)

May show as warm relays that should be cold. Check after 40-45 mins. Or measure current, which should be very low after that time (say 50mA or 100mA).

Other suspect is the ignition. (Same outcome with modules.)

Default Kitty Crap Update ... Ghost it the machine?

So it's been a while with nothing happening. Hmmmmm.

So what's happened since the last two incidences?

After the last time around I noticed that my headlamps were staying on for a while and I discovered I had been inadvertently using the auto delay off feature.

So I turned the lights to full manual for a week. No repeat of the symptoms.

Then we went on a long 5 hour drive. I put the headlamps in auto mode which does NOT delay the off timing it just brings them on automatically as needed.

I've been in that mode for a week and no symptoms.

So this has me wondering if there's something about the auto-delay-off feature on my particular car that's causing the battery to drain over a 3-4 day period?

I don't think it can just be the headlamps being on an extra 2-3 minutes when I stop. I haven't noticed any lamps being stuck on for long periods either.

During all of this the battery never went completely dead.

Maybe a slightly faulty rotary switch - maybe even a bit of dirt now rubbed off? hmm. Too good to be true.

But just the switch isn't going to cause such a drain it would have to be leaving something on and I should notice that. I did not.

I was at first just surprised that the lights were staying and and for 3 minutes! I didn't even know the feature was there. I have too many cars with crap like this and they all work differently so sometimes I forget what's normal with a particular one.

Well I'll run for another week like this then try putting back on auto-delay-off and seeing if she craps again.

After that it's time for Hercule Poirot and the little grey cells ...

Yeah, it can't be the switch - unless it works in a way that's more complex than I'm ASSUMING. That's the word that worries me!

Or it could just as easily be ignition-switch-SCLM related (or any other module), and merely coincidence that it appears to be related to the switch.

Good idea to see if you can provoke it again. Take a spare battery? Any from your other cars would likely do.

Default The saga continues

So here we are 3 weeks later and it's baaaaaaaad kitty time once again.

I haven't been driving the car much the last few days but each time the starter sounded a little slow. Uh oh! Then yesterday morning it did the beeping thing and parking brake fault display while starting the car but it did start.


This just doesn't sound like a bad battery to me. It sounds more like something get's left on as a load but not on a regular basis. One thing I've noticed is that the rh front passenger door doesn't always turn on the interior lights when opened.

Hmmmmmmm.
