Default Need advice - 2001 S-Type 4.0

Going to take a look at a 2001 4.0 S Type. Car has 73k miles. I'm completely foreign to Jaguar.

Never driven or even been in one. Was always intimidated. This would not be a daily driver. Would be used a couple days during the week and on weekends.

What specifically should I be paying particular attention to? Should I even consider a 2001?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'd avoid the 4.0 and instead get a 3.0 or 4.2 because the 4.0 will need its timing chain tensioners and related parts replacing.

Are you sure you want to buy any 17 year old car?

Thanks for the advice. Car was a mess. It's funny what people consider great condition. Smelled of oil burning and the entire hood was oxidized.

Found a 2004 3.0 with 63k miles that I'm trying to check out. Supposedly well maintained. We'll see.

Yes, listen.. I own a 2000 S Type 4.0 that just passed 253,000 miles the other day. When things are good, this is one of the best driving and handling cars I have ever driven.

But most times it's the exception, not the rule. Biggest issue are the tensioners going sideways...(I changed mine, not one but twice & I DIY everything on this car)

But there are so many other short comings as well... It's a 17 year olds car, stay away...
