Default Need advice

Looking to buy a 2005 Jag S Type R with 56k miles. I can get 7500 for it and it comes with a clean car fax and detailed history. Previous owner spent thousands replacing or fixing many of the known issues. He told me it just threw a EGR code po400. Any advice from the pros?

The price is decent enough if it all works and the interior headliner isn't collapsing. If the leather on the seats is cracked, the cost to releather in real leather is about $4-5oo per seat. Engine and electrical on these cars will nickel dime you to friggin' death. Be prepared to do your own maintenance unless you have a pocket full of money. There is a good detailed JTIS manual you can download but it doesn't work on anything past windows seven. If you don't mind the minor stuff breaking all the time, the body style is unbeatable. The rest is a sort of Ford Taurus. Good luck.

I think its a good price for the quality of car.

I did the trans line leak fix myself. I also flushed and changed the pan/filter. My cost for parts was close to $550. If he had it done at a jag dealership I'm sure it cost him $1k (using the proper ZF oil)

The egr probably just needs a good cleaning....but it is difficult to get to so a new one is the way to go in this case....the computer is commanding a certain percentage and the pintle is not matching it. ..cleaning is worth a try when access is easy, or funds are tight

The two major issues that can be costly to repair are the coolant return hose underneath the supercharger and the gearbox cooling lines.

If you plan on purchasing this vehicle, bear in mind that despite the appearance of low miles, the vehicle is nearly fifteen years old. Many items, such as window regulators, battery and suspension parts may need to be replaced sooner rather than later.

The X202 to the best of my knowledge has no relationship to the Ford Taurus, which is a front wheel drive vehicle with a six cylinder, transversely mounted drivetrain. There are some parts shared with the Lincoln LS models, which are also rear wheel drive.

Looks like the biggest repair has been done. But ask if he replaced that hose and not just checked it! Also, how many coolant hoses were replaced?

I'm in the middle of doing mine now. That's a big bullet to dodge.

The engine oil and transmission oil cooling hoses begin weeping. Looks like the tranny lines got done - good. The engine ones will be next due to poor design.

I'll just say that I got mine with low miles about 9 years ago and it's at 70K now. There's always something breaking on this car. They drive beautifully but many things are quite fragile. The brakes have been great though. Only thing Jag didn't design or hand off to a less than supplier. I just replaced my rotors and they could have been turned. Suspension pieces will be starting to fail now. Cooling system plastic parts are quite fragile and there are a ton of hoses on this car. My speedo failed. My turn signal stalk failed. I've had three coolant tanks and all of them weep. My headlamps failed almost as soon as I got the car but I had an extended warranty to cover that. There is a lot of info on here about how to deal with that. Changing the HID bulbs is a total nightmare so be ready to do some of your own work. That's the thing. You need to be a DIY guy or it'll eat your wallet.

The entry price is quite low for a reason.

Ditto x 10

I am a DIY'er and once everything is fixed.. S-Type's are decent cars. IMO its A LOT like a C4 corvette. There are a lot of little idiosyncrasies. But once you address everything they are better than most "average people" give them credit for.
