I am stuck at a gas station and the jag will not shift out of park into drive. It drove just fine here. What is causing this... Please advise

 

might be the 2 8mm bolts located under the vehicle drivers side that hold the shift cable to the tranny.

 

It's usually some type of shift solenoid issue or brake pedal switch problem. Does your car have a plastic plug very close to the shifter? My XJ8s have a round plug that can be unscrewed and then you stick a screwdriver or something down the hole to allow the shifter to move. The plug on mine is a start shaped thing, kind like a Torx screw.

 

avt the post face lift S Types do not have the plastic parts that the earlier models have in the shifter linkage. My bet is on the shift cable bolts.

could it be a fuse, even the sport mode light does not light up...I made it home, had it towed back to the house

 

My friend mention something about the electronics to the brake or shifter module could be shorted or out. I took the jag to the car wash and then went to fill it up with gas.
It messed up at the gas pump....drove just fine until I went and started the car up and it wouldnt shift.

 

Ok its not the bracket that holds the cable in place, its all tight, what is the next option?

 

Try a hard reset, I'm not certain it will be a fix but it's free and sometimes does surprising things.

 

I am assuming your talking about unplugging the battery and wait 10 minutes and reattached the battery correct?

 

Unhook the battery, and hold the cables together for 20 seconds or so. Then hook it back up, that resets the electrical gremlins sometimes.

 

ok day 2, weather got way colder again, currently have shifter exposed, didn't see anything broken, unplugged the battery, nothing, check the bracket, all bolts are there and tight, cable is in perfect shape, I cant find a shifter release mechanism of any form. currently chasing down fuses but the ones I thought may be the culprit are good. I am running out of options, Still need advice...Search you tube but the ones I found are different makes and models or of older Jaguars that have a key shift unlock or you pop open a cover and insert a screwdriver. I do not want to take this to a shop, already out 85 dollars to tow it home. I know this has to be a simple fix and I am sure others on this forum has run across this before and fix the issue, Please post what you done and if possible send pics or a video link to fix this issue. Thanks for everyones help that has posted. I was really hoping it was the bracket on the driver side that was the issue but it wasn't....Would of been a very simple fix.

 

one other method I did try was rocking the car back and forth while trying to move the shifter into drive and that didn't work either

 

Really wasn't a fun day yesterday, even had to replace my water heater at home as well, That was simple, this shifter is throwing me off. I have in the past taking a manual transmission and converted it to an automatic, Change out the shifter and put an automatic one in....This should be something simple, just haven't figured it out yet

 

I am at a loss. In my years here, other than the tranny bolts for our post face lift MYs, I do not recall this problem.


Is there a sensor on the brake pedal bar that when brake is depressed releases the shifter? IDK

 

I'm sure there are Rick or the solenoid itself may have failed.
I don't believe there is any easy way to bypass the solenoid, you will need to pull off the shifter surround there are pics and details here Repair & Upgrade - JaguarClimateControl.com
You could then check the solenoid for power.

 

I have already pulled the surround off, let me shoot some pics and post....

 

I am also going to pull every fuse to make sure they are not bad or at least the ones I can physically see. I know there are three fuse compartments. one under the hood, one inside on the passenger side and one in the trunk next to the battery.

 

ok this is very strange, its working now. the shifter is now lighting up and it moved into drive.....my conclusion is something got wet during the carwash and shorted or grounded out. Question is what would make this do that to prevent it from happening in the future. Its never done this with all the ice and snow we been having and from numerous trips to get the vehicle washed. I know I cant trouble shoot now until it happens again.
