Default New to the forum, 05 S type 3.0

I have a 2005 S type 3.0 with 45,000 on it. The car is great, but I do have a couple questions. Every time I am at speeds of 50 to 70 mph the engine and tranny sounds fine, but when I press on the accelerator slightly it makes a whining/whistling sound. When I accelerate harder it goes away. If I take my foot completely off the accelerator, the sound goes away. Any ideas?

I also have a 2005 S Type 3.0 with about 45K on it and it does the exact same thing so I would also be interested in knowing what this is. I've owned the car for a year and a half now. At first I thought it might just be intake noise but I am starting to think it might be the rear end / differential.

My car is under "Select Edition" warranty so I was going to dealer and ask them to check it out but I have this feeling they are going to say it's normal, just like they did for "the lurch" which was fixed by the emissions recall re-flash.

Mike (Member Name "carelm") had this issue in late 2009 and had it repaired under his Select Edition warranty. It is described as a rear-end whine at about 60 mph, and the fix is described in Technical Service Bulletin TSB 205003. The rear axle assembly and axle housing bushing must be replaced....

Hopefully Mike will see this thread in the next day or so and will chime in with more details....

This may be what used to be TSB ST205-003 but I think is now JTB00053v2. Check the symptoms carefully to see if they match as there are similar-ish rare problems.

Read your warranty and/or ask them. As you haven't put your car details in your profile I can't even guess but I doubt it.

Isn't that a guess?

I had my differential replaced under the Select Edition warranty. Jaguar redesigned the differential when I had mine done so it took a little longer to have it replaced. I had to wait for Jaguar to release the new differential with a new part number. Interestingly enough the 2007 XK series used the same differential so they are also subject to the same TSB and warranty fix. The dealer should put the car on a lift, run the car up to an indicated 60 mph and listen for noise from the differential. It normally takes about a day or so to get the authorization from Select Edition.

Mike

I think my 03 Stype has it too. When I come to a slow stop, it's like a get a little bump on the tail end of the car! Not always, but sometimes. I read in the forum that it was a computer programming issue in the tranny, not the tranny itself. I'd be interested in what the dealer actually did to correct it and what the cost might be. I have extended warranty but it does not cover the electrical side of the transmission. Thanks

I have a 2003 S-Type V-6 with about 70K miles. There is "resonating" noise from the rear which has recently appeared even at speeds below 60 mph. We have switched wheels front to back without a change. While up on the lift, the noise goes away. Any suggestions? Wheel bearings maybe?

You may want to see if your car is covered under the J004 recall notice. Jaguar reflashes the ECU and TCM which takes about an hour and a half or so. This may cure the "lurch" issue.
