Default New guy starting on a cylinder head gasket change... 3.0

Hi everybody!

I have an '03 s-type, 3.0 that is burning a bunch of coolant. I am assuming head gasket because I am somewhat fluent in other vehicles and any time I have seen that in the past it was a head gasket. Is there anything tricky or magical about these guys? I understand the cams have to be timed again, but hopefully (I am just started, not in it yet) there are marks to line up? Other than that, do you have any tips or hints to make this job less terrible?

I appreciate all the help I can get, I have done some pushrod car engines, and some ohc motorcycle motors, one dohc quad four a million years ago, but never a modern dohc car engine, so I'm not intimidated, but cautious. ;-)

Thanks for any advice!

-Parker

Unusual. Are you really sure it's burning it as opposed to it losing it?

it's got a pretty legit smoke cloud when it's running. It had a leaky overflow tank, and when loaned to a friend I believe it got to run low of coolant, and subsequently got good and hot. If you have a better idea, I am completely all ears! If it was a 5.0 ford, and it smoked like that, and smelled like that, it would be a head gasket... that's pretty much 100% of my deductive reasoning thus far.

Also, got the back two plugs out on the passenger side, and you can see the pond in there, when you shake the car... she's leaking water.

Default Is changing head gasket in the vehicle possible?

Does a guy need to drop the motor to pull the front cover, or is it do-able with the engine in the vehicle? Does anybody know?

Thanks a ton!
