New Member/brakes, control arms, headliner, visors.
I have a 2005 S-Type, V-6, 54,000 miles, never had a service issue or been repaired except one time. The one of two bolts backed out of the linkage on the transmission. Repair costs, $12.00. I recently had the oil changed and the center 4 fastners on the belly pan were not replaced. The noise it made sounded like a brake pad with worn out lining. I check the pads, OK, but about a quarter left. I decided to go ahead and do complete brake job. All four rotors, and pads from O'Reilly Auto Parts, $324.00.
While I was under the car I discovered that all of the ball joints that had a clear plastic boot, the boots had cracked and parts of them were missing, the grease was still there and no wear. I checked Jaguar Dealer for parts prices, I won't do that again. Using the internet I purchased the front upper control arms, tie rod ends (USA produced, ISO 9001 quality control, 5 year warranty) for $220.00 shipped. Rear tie ends, $102. Rear stabilizer links, $48.00. I suppose the seals were not designed for the heat and humidity that we have here in the Southern US. (Also the headliner).
All of the repairs were done by me in my home garage using basic hand tools and some speciality tools borrowed from the auto parts house., spring compressors, rear caliper piston compressor tool. I am 77 years old.
That left only the head liner that was starting to sag in the back and sun visors to be repaired. Jaguar wants $250 each for the sun visors. I checked all the forums I could find and no one had had the visors recovered. I went to a number of auto upholstery shops, no one wanted to recover them , said it could not be done, that the mirrors would break being removed. Long story short, Bryants' Custom Upholstery in Slidell, LA recovered both visors, the sun roof shade, and replaced the head liner for $668.00. They matched the color perfectly and did an excellent job. My wife is very pleased, therefore I am very pleased. They did not remove the windshield or seats. He said they reclined the front seat backs and were very careful. He said it took about 30 seconds to remove both mirrors from the visors. There is not a scratch or smudge on the interior of the car.
We are looking for another 50,000 miles from this excellent automobile.
